FTE: 0.9 FTE position, consisting of 0.6 FTE in a regularly scheduled block rotation within the Emergency Department and 0.3 FTE designated as cross departmental coverage of Med/Surg and ED based on staffing needs, patient volume, acuity, and demonstrated competency

Work Schedule: 6:00 pm – 6:30 am with every 3rd weekend rotation. 2 holidays per year.

Job Summary:

Responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Maintains accountability for his/her own practice; provides nursing care for patients; participates in patient and family teaching; and provides leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary, nursing, and other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the acute care setting. The ED Registered Nurse also delegates/provides direction to other nursing personnel in the unit in accordance with their level of experience and expertise.

Qualifications:

• Graduate of accredited school of nursing with current WI RN licensure in good standing.
• Minimum of one year RN experience (or equivalent) required.
• Minimum of one year ED experience preferred.
• Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, and TNCC (or similar trauma certification) or willing to obtain.
• Meets OMC health requirements

Responsibilities include:

• Collaborates with registration, ED clinicians, and Urgent Care clinicians to direct patients to the appropriate care setting
• Initiates approved nursing-driven orders and clinical protocols within the RN's scope of practice, organizational policy, and validated competency
• Provides skilled nursing care in accordance with Nurse Practice acts.
• Delegates care appropriately to other team members
• Follows the Standards of Nursing Care as well as the Nursing Process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation while delivering high quality patient care.
• Continually strives to meet and exceed customer service standards in all interactions with customers, which include patients, visitors, other hospital employees, and medical staff
• Demonstrates critical thinking skills.
• Personal accountability to stay up to date on all communication.
• Communicates an accurate and concise end of shift patient report.
• Interacts with physicians regarding patient status on an on-going basis.
• Communicates effectively with all members of the patient care team.
• Communicates patient status and plan of care with patient and their family.
• Attends staff meetings and mandatory education.
• Maintains appropriate licenses and certifications independently.
• Daily audit of crash cart, trauma cart, pediatric cart, glucometer and refrigerator temperatures with completion of associated documentation
• Participates in emergency response, trauma, cardiac arrest, stroke, sepsis, and other time-sensitive clinical protocols.
• Performs rapid assessment and prioritization of patients based on acuity.
• Participates in stabilization and transfer of patients requiring a higher level of care.
• Assists with stabilization, preparation, coordination, and transfer of patients to facilities capable of providing the level of care required, including communication with receiving facilities and transport teams.
• Performs initial nursing assessment and triage in accordance with established ED triage processes and validated competency.
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned within the scope of the position, licensure, education, training, and demonstrated competency.

• Demonstrates flexibility in assignment and supports both departments within the RN's scope of practice and demonstrated competencies.

• Skilled in use of basic patient care equipment and supplies
• Demonstrate and maintain required competencies.
• Recognize change in patient condition/body systems.
• Knowledge of infection control practices and their relation to patient care outcomes
• Accuracy and attention to detail in performing all job duties.
• Assess multiple systems, develop plan of care, provide intervention and education, and assess outcomes of patient care.
• Ensure clinician orders are reviewed, acknowledged, and carried out accurately and timely in accordance with organizational policy and the RN's scope of practice
• Effectively participate in the interdisciplinary care team
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with patients, family members and co-workers.
• Communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
• Maintain confidentiality per HIPAA and OMC policy.
• Provide age appropriate and culturally appropriate care.
• Participate in the orientation process of new staff.
• Will float to Med/Surg unit during times of low ED volume as needed

Physical Requirements for the Role: 

• Stands and walks up to eight to twelve hours daily while performing patient care and treatment activities.
• Squats and kneels occasionally, reach to shoulder height occasionally, use manual dexterity to perform care/treatment activities, and use visual and auditory acuity to see details
• Ability to lift independently up to 50 pounds as well as push and pull up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to lift, with assistance, over 100 pounds daily.
• Use a computer for 2 to 4 hours or more a day for EMR documentation.

Work Environment: 

• Provides patient care in a hospital nursing department.
• May be exposed to hazardous substances, harmful physical agents, and infectious agents that exist in the patient care areas.
• May be exposed to toxic substances brought in by patients exposed elsewhere.
