Position Summary

The Senior Project Manager is responsible for the overall planning, execution, financial performance, and successful delivery of complex commercial, government, military, and maritime repair projects at Boston Ship Repair. Serving as the primary customer interface and senior project leader, this position manages multiple concurrent vessel repair projects, oversees project teams, and ensures all work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract requirements.

The Senior Project Manager provides leadership across all phases of project execution, including estimating support, planning, scheduling, budgeting, production coordination, subcontractor management, change order negotiations, customer relations, invoicing, collections, and final project closeout. This role also serves as a mentor to Project Managers and Project Coordinators while supporting the strategic growth and operational excellence of the shipyard.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Customer and Contract Management

• Serve as the primary point of contact for vessel owners, government representatives, contracting officers, surveyors, and regulatory agencies.
• Develop and maintain strong customer relationships throughout the project lifecycle.
• Lead contract review, interpretation, administration, and execution.
• Negotiate contract modifications, change orders, equitable adjustments, and claims.
• Provide regular project status updates to customers and executive management.
• Resolve contractual, technical, and operational issues while maintaining positive customer relationships.

Project Planning and Execution

• Develop comprehensive project execution plans, budgets, schedules, resource plans, and risk assessments.
• Lead project kickoff meetings and establish project objectives and performance metrics.
• Coordinate all shipyard departments including Production, Planning, Engineering, Purchasing, Safety, Quality Assurance, and Accounting.
• Monitor project performance and implement corrective actions when necessary.
• Maintain project schedules and critical path milestones utilizing Microsoft Project and other project management tools.
• Ensure proper documentation and administration of all project records, correspondence, and deliverables.
• Prepare executive-level reports and presentations regarding project performance, risks, opportunities, and financial results.

Financial Management and Accountability

• Maintain full profit and loss responsibility for assigned projects.
• Develop and manage project budgets ranging from routine maintenance availabilities to multi-million-dollar vessel repair contracts.
• Monitor labor productivity, material expenditures, subcontractor costs, and project margins.
• Review and approve project forecasts and revenue recognition.
• Support billing, collections, and cash flow management activities.
• Identify opportunities to improve project profitability while maintaining customer satisfaction and quality standards.

Leadership and Workforce Development

• Lead multidisciplinary project teams consisting of project managers, coordinators, supervisors, planners, subcontractors, and production personnel.
• Provide mentoring and professional development for junior project management staff.
• Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, safety, and continuous improvement.
• Facilitate effective communication between management, customers, labor representatives, and production teams.
• Support workforce planning and resource allocation across multiple projects.

Operational Excellence

• Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, quality, cost reduction, and schedule performance.
• Participate in development of shipyard best practices, procedures, and project management standards.
• Analyze project performance metrics and implement lessons learned across future projects.
• Support implementation of technology, automation, and process improvement initiatives throughout the shipyard.
• Assist executive leadership with strategic planning, capital improvement initiatives, and operational assessments.

Safety, Quality, and Environmental Compliance

• Champion Boston Ship Repair's commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, NAVSEA, USCG, EPA, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
• Lead project safety meetings and participate in incident investigations when required.
• Ensure all work is executed in accordance with contract specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Promote proactive hazard identification and risk mitigation throughout project execution.

Business Development Support

• Support proposal development, estimating reviews, and bid strategy discussions.
• Participate in customer meetings, industry events, and business development activities.
• Assist in identifying future opportunities with commercial, government, and military customers.
• Support development of long-term customer relationships that contribute to shipyard growth.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Direct supervision of Ship Superintendents.
• Functional leadership of multidisciplinary project personnel throughout project execution.
• Responsibility for team performance, development, and project outcomes.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Engineering, Business Management, Project Management, or a related discipline preferred.
• Minimum of 10 years of shipyard, marine repair, maritime operations, naval maintenance, or industrial project management experience.
• Minimum of 5 years managing complex vessel repair projects valued at $10 million or greater.
• Demonstrated experience managing fixed-price and government contracts.
• Experience supporting U.S. Navy, MSC, MARAD, USCG, commercial vessel, or offshore vessel repair programs preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior shipyard production, engineering, marine engineering, or vessel operations experience.
• Experience with NAVSEA, MSC, MARAD, or other federal maritime agencies.
• Knowledge of shipyard estimating, planning, scheduling, and resource management systems.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Ability to board vessels, access dry docks, climb ladders, and navigate active shipyard environments as needed.
• Ability to work in both office and industrial settings.
• Ability to stand, walk, and inspect work areas for extended periods as needed.
• Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment

This position operates in both office and shipyard environments and may involve exposure to weather conditions, vessel machinery spaces, construction activities, elevated work areas, confined spaces, noise, dust, and other industrial conditions. Travel may be required in support of vessel repair projects, customer meetings, and business development activities.

Reports directly to the President of Boston Ship Repair, LLC.
