Job Title: Surgical Technologist and Sterile Processing Technologist

Description:
The Surgical Technologist shall be responsible for the delivery of care to surgical patients.
They contribute to the efficient function of the Surgery Department.
They provide instruction in the technical aspects of surgery and the Surgical Department.
This includes training medical students, nurses, other technicians, and sometimes patients and their families.


The Sterile Processing Technologist is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and proper care of surgical equipment.
They are crucial in preventing infection and ensuring the functionality of equipment in the surgical facility.


Essential Job Duties for Surgical Technologist:
Pick instrument sets and other appropriate instrumentation based on the proposed surgery, possible complications, and surgeon preferences.
Check the operating room for necessary equipment.
Scrub, gown, and glove self and other team members for the operative procedure.
Drape the patient or assist the surgeon with draping according to approved methods.
Handle instruments correctly and ensure their proper functioning.
Maintain proper techniques and practices in the operating room and address any breaches in sterile technique.
Count sponges and sharps with the Circulating Nurse before surgery, before the peritoneum closure, and after.
Anticipate the surgeon's needs to avoid unnecessary delays.
Assist with room clean-up before and after the procedure.
Prepare for following procedures.
Act as the first assistant to the surgeon as needed, which may include retracting tissue, cutting sutures, sponging blood, or irrigating the wound.
Properly identify and preserve specimens received during surgery.
Keep the OR Supervisor informed of progress and changes in instrumentation and equipment.
Notify other staff of surgery schedule changes.
Assist in the orientation, training, and education of personnel.
Teach and direct other personnel assigned to work under their direction.
Restock supplies for the department according to established inventory levels.
Identify and report servicing and maintenance needs of all surgical equipment and instrumentation.
Understand procedures for transporting and receiving preoperative patients.
Be willing to expand knowledge of surgical technology through various educational avenues.
Be flexible to work different shifts, take call, and work weekends as needed.
Attend departmental staff meetings to enhance communication and education on new policies and procedures.
Respect patient rights to privacy and confidentiality.
Follow the chain of command by reporting pertinent information to the department supervisor.
Perform other duties as assigned.


Essential Job Duties for Sterile Processing Technologist:
Be trained to know all surgical equipment functions and uses.
Maintain necessary supply levels in sterile storage areas.
Check equipment for leaks, broken or loose parts, and other defects.
Clean and sterilize all tools according to specific protocols.
Organize inventory and ensure proper tools are available for all procedures.
Stock and inventory crash carts.
Distribute instruments within the facility to the surgery department and other areas.
Operate and monitor sterilization tools, including steam autoclaves and sonic washers.
Organize surgical instrument trays.
Record sterilizer test results.
Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualification and Education Requirements:
Successful graduation from a Surgical Technologist training program or a minimum of one year of experience in OR scrub nursing (may be waived at the discretion of the OR Supervisor).
Thorough knowledge of medical asepsis as it applies to the operating room.
Proper handling of tissue specimens, cultures, and smears.
Good understanding of various instruments used for different types of operations and proper operating room setup.
Skills to manage tedious tasks, such as memorizing surgical instruments and maintaining inventory of supplies.
Ability to tolerate sight and exposure to blood and body tissues.
Proper training in cleaning procedures and safety protocols will be required.
