The Sr. Mechanical Designer is an experienced, hands-on mechanical design professional responsible for developing and documenting mechanical and electromechanical products. This position focuses on SOLIDWORKS® 3D modeling, detailed drawings, electronic packaging, and practical mechanical problem-solving. The Sr. Mechanical Designer works independently and collaboratively with engineering and manufacturing personnel to support new product development and sustaining engineering. U.S. citizenship required. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a government security clearance.

Responsibilities:

Mechanical Design & Engineering Support:

\n
• Develop and maintain SOLIDWORKS 3D models, fabrication and assembly drawings, parts, Bills of Material (BOMs), and related engineering documentation using SOLIDWORKS PDM and PLM systems.
\n
• Design and document mechanical and electromechanical assemblies, including mechanical packaging and integration solutions for RF/microwave assemblies, antennas, and related products.
\n
• Independently resolve mechanical design, packaging, tolerance, assembly, and product integration challenges in coordination with responsible engineers.
\n
• Support product development from concept and prototype through production release and sustaining engineering.
\n
• Apply ASME Y14.5 drafting standards, Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T), Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and Design to Cost (DTC) principles.
\n
• Incorporate approved engineering red-lines, design modifications, and revisions into controlled models, drawings, and documentation.
\n
• Participate in design reviews, prototype builds, troubleshooting, and production-support activities while coordinating with manufacturing and suppliers.
\n
• Provide technical guidance to less-experienced designers and support legacy documentation using AutoCAD as required.
\n

Configuration Management & Engineering Change Control:

\n
• Support engineering configuration management, engineering change control, and PLM processes.
\n
• Coordinate and support the processing of Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) through review, approval, and release.
\n
• Review ECN packages for completeness, drawing and BOM accuracy, revision consistency, supporting documentation, and required approvals.
\n
• Coordinate engineering changes through Engineering Documentation Control (EDC), Project Engineering, Change Control Board (CCB), and other applicable approval processes; assign required approvers, monitor workflows, and resolve issues affecting timely processing and release.
\n
• Verify approved engineering changes are properly incorporated into controlled drawings, documents, BOMs, and product configuration records.
\n
• Support final engineering documentation reviews, PLM-to-ERP data transfers, customer change requirements, and ECN workflow closure.
\n
• Create and support PLM records, part information, BOMs, drawing revisions, and associated product configuration data.
\n
• Prepare or coordinate customer engineering change packages and support engineering documentation for new, legacy, and build-to-print (BTP) products.
\n

Cross-Functional Coordination & Technical Support:

\n
• Work with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Contracts, and IT to resolve design, documentation, and configuration issues.
\n
• Provide guidance and training on engineering drawings, ECN processing, PLM workflows, and configuration management practices.
\n
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
\n

Technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

\n
• Advanced proficiency with SOLIDWORKS for 3D mechanical modeling, assembly development, and detailed engineering drawing creation.
\n
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to independently develop practical mechanical and electromechanical design solutions.
\n
• Extensive knowledge of mechanical drawings, dimensioning, tolerancing, materials, fasteners, and mechanical assemblies.
\n
• Strong working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 drafting standards and GD&T.
\n
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal fabrication, additive manufacturing, and mechanical assembly.
\n
• Experience with electronic packaging and electromechanical components such as connectors, PCBs, cables, motors, and related hardware.
\n
• Working knowledge of Engineering Change Management, Configuration Management, PLM systems, BOM management, and revision control.
\n
• Experience with SOLIDWORKS PDM or comparable engineering data management systems.
\n
• Ability to review and interpret engineering change packages, drawings, specifications, BOMs, and supporting documentation.
\n
• Strong technical problem-solving, organizational, analytical, and multitasking abilities with the ability to work independently.
\n
• Effective verbal and written communication, attention to detail, and ability to coordinate activities across departments.
\n
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications.
\n

Experience:

\n
• Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible mechanical design, drafting, or CAD experience, including substantial hands-on SOLIDWORKS experience.
\n
• Experience independently developing mechanical models, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and engineering documentation for complex mechanical or electromechanical products.
\n
• Experience with engineering change control, configuration management, PLM systems, BOM management, and revision-controlled engineering documentation.
\n
• Experience supporting new product development, manufacturing, sustaining engineering, and technical coordination with engineering and production personnel.
\n
• Experience with electronic packaging, RF/microwave assemblies, aerospace/defense products, or other high-reliability electromechanical products is preferred.
\n

Education:

\n
• Associate degree in Computer-Aided Drafting and Design, Mechanical Design, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Engineering Graphics, Drafting Technology, or a related technical discipline is preferred.
\n
• Technical/trade-school education, military technical training, or equivalent practical mechanical design experience will be considered.
