Job Title: Phlebotomist Inpatient, On-Call / Per Diem

Job Description

This on-call inpatient Phlebotomist role focuses on high-volume blood collection and specimen processing in a hospital environment, serving patients of all ages, including pediatric, ICU, and other critical care populations. You will perform venipuncture and capillary blood draws, support specimen processing, and help maintain a strong culture of safety and regulatory compliance. This position offers a flexible, per diem schedule with the opportunity to gain valuable hospital experience and expand your hours by picking up shifts across multiple locations.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood collection using venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients across all age groups, including pediatric and adult populations.
• Complete pediatric blood collections safely and effectively, demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of children and their families.
• Handle difficult blood draws, including patients in medical office buildings and other challenging clinical situations.
• Process specimens accurately and efficiently in an inpatient setting, ensuring proper labeling, handling, and routing.
• Follow all hospital and laboratory protocols for specimen collection, processing, and documentation to support accurate test results.
• Maintain a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety standards, including infection control and laboratory regulations.
• Communicate the importance of safety and regulatory compliance clearly and effectively to colleagues and other staff members.
• Provide orientation and training for patient service staff, demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and safety procedures.
• Respond to same-day, on-call requests and report to work within a short time frame when contacted by supervisors or schedulers.
• Work across all shifts, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, as well as weekends, based on operational needs and call-outs.
• Adapt to varying workloads driven by higher patient volumes and the need for additional coverage in the inpatient setting.
• Travel between designated hospital and medical office locations within the service area to support coverage needs and increase hours.
• Participate fully in initial training on 1st shift, Monday through Friday, for several weeks prior to transitioning into the on-call schedule.
• Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and flexibility while working in an on-call, per diem capacity.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Current CPT 1 License.
• At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting, including exposure to pediatric, ICU, high-volume, and inpatient environments.
• Proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary technique for patients of all age groups.
• Demonstrated ability to perform pediatric blood collections safely and effectively.
• Experience with difficult blood draws, including patients in medical office buildings and other challenging scenarios.
• Ability to perform inpatient specimen processing accurately and efficiently.
• Strong understanding of compliance, safety, and infection control requirements in a hospital laboratory environment.
• Ability to clearly communicate the importance of compliance and safety to other employees.
• Capability to provide orientation and training to patient service staff on phlebotomy procedures and safety practices.
• Willingness and ability to work in areas caring for patients with infectious diseases.
• Flexibility to work 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, as well as weekends, in an on-call, per diem capacity.
• Availability to respond to same-day calls and report to work within a few hours when contacted.
• Comfort working strictly on-call, with schedules that may change based on same-day staffing needs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Previous experience in high-volume inpatient hospital laboratories is highly beneficial.
• Comfort working in ICU and other critical care units.
• Ability to adapt quickly to different hospital and medical office environments.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
• Reliability and professionalism in managing an unpredictable, on-call schedule.
• Motivation to gain hospital experience and build a long-term career in phlebotomy or laboratory services.
• Willingness to travel between multiple hospital and medical office locations to pick up additional shifts.
• Openness to ongoing learning and skill development through training and on-the-job experience.

Work Environment

This is an on-call, per diem hospital-based role within an inpatient laboratory setting. You will primarily work in inpatient units, including high-volume and critical care areas, with responsibilities that may extend to medical office buildings and multiple locations within the regional network. The position exists to support higher patient volumes and increased coverage needs, so most shifts arise from same-day call-outs and dynamic staffing requirements. You will train on 1st shift, Monday through Friday, at a single location for the first few weeks to become familiar with hospital procedures, equipment, and workflows. After training, you will transition to an on-call schedule and may be asked to work 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shifts, including weekends. Hours will vary, and you may receive same-day calls requiring you to report within a few hours. Supervisors and schedulers will contact you with available shifts, and you can choose to pick up additional hours at various inpatient and medical office locations to increase your workload. The work environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety, infection control, and regulatory standards, including working in units where patients with infectious diseases. Dress code requires scrubs while on duty. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Riverside, CA.

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $26.00/hr.
