Utility Specialist - Water Department

Position Summary The Utility Specialist reports to the Superintendent, Water Treatment Manager, and Foreman. The role ensures daily water department operations are efficient, assisting with maintenance, routine tasks, and repairs for drinking water treatment and distribution. Responsibilities include ensuring proper system operation, operating heavy equipment, and maintaining customer service excellence. Responsibilities Assist with laying, installing, and connecting water mains, services, valves, and meters per drawings. Conduct preventative, scheduled maintenance on pumps, motors, gasoline engines, valves, and switches; perform minor repairs on electrical and plumbing systems. Operate, maintain, and repair heavy equipment/department vehicles and power tools. Perform scheduled and special readings of residential, commercial, and/or industrial water meters; collaborate with Business Manager and Office Staff for accurate billing. Record and maintain information on service lines, gates, hydrants, water mains, meters, back-flow prevention devices, and valves; file materials for department records. Inspect water mains installed by private contractors. Identify water main and service leaks, maintain hydrants and valves, troubleshoot problems, and make repairs as required. Maintain all Water Department properties, including mowing and snow removal. Maintain and repair meters and meter interface hardware. Utilize basic computer skills. Complete forms for state tracking and reporting. Respond to emergencies. Perform other duties as assigned. Work unsupervised at times. Required Experience, Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Minimum of two years experience in the drinking water supply industry preferred. Must obtain a Massachusetts Grade 1 Distribution License within two years. Basic knowledge of water hydraulics, electrical systems, plumbing, construction, and pump station & distribution system information is beneficial. Verbal and written communication skills and basic office skills required. Adhere to safety practices, respond to emergencies regardless of weather (field position). Education, Training, Special Licensure/Certification Requirements High School Diploma and a valid driver’s license required. May require additional licenses: hydraulic/backhoe, Class II Commercial Driver’s License, Level 1 distribution and treatment licenses, back-flow prevention, and/or cross-connection tester/surveyor. Contacts Frequent contact with the public, Water Department personnel, contractors, public utility representatives, and other town department employees. Bend, kneel, reach, and squat frequently. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, noise, and seasonally changing assignments.
