Fabrication Supervisor - SDCA

Reporting & Authority Reports to: Production Manager SDCA Supervises: Fabrication Personnel Direction Exercised: Authority to assign work to employees Discretion Exercised: Discretionary authority to correct, discipline and recommend pay increases Liaises With: Other Production Supervisors, Logistics Supervisors, Surveyors, Human Resources, Project and Engineering Departments Responsibilities Implement the Ten Fundamentals of Supervision Ensure a working environment conducive to worker comfort and safety Set and monitor time goals for all tasks Monitor work performance of staff daily and undertake assessments as required Enhance and encourage skill development of staff Monitor timekeeping and verify hours Encourage effective communications and flexibility within the team, and gain an understanding of their needs and problems Provide motivation, maintain a high level of morale and minimize confrontation Ensure on‑job training and instruction is provided for trainees and apprentices Provide avenue for cross‑training production staff in multiple trade skills Provide feedback to Foreman or Manager on performance Provide constant feedback to leadership regarding Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety, Morale Ensure compliance of all work is IAW Austal procedures and NAVSEA Standard Items Manage repair efforts in various offsite locations; travel may exceed 40% Materials Plan Generate requisitions for leadership approval Ensure economic use of materials to meet quality targets and reduce material elimination Control issuing and consumption of consumables Control scheduling of production parts and lead times Ensure required deliveries to hold a safe and clean work area Equipment Control and Maintenance Maintain records of company equipment and machinery under control Ensure regular maintenance of equipment in conjunction with relevant Department Communicate process improvement potential with equipment requests Safety Maintain safe working environment meeting Austal standards and local regulations Attend to injuries of staff and follow up with necessary paperwork Promote culture of safe working environment stressing hot work safety, cleanliness, and compliance with Austal procedures Housekeeping Promote and maintain team housekeeping standards Quality Control Inspect work and ensure quality is maintained during all phases Inspect and sign off all completed work Implement and maintain quality standards, check sheets and procedures Ensure company policies and procedures are understood and adhered to Identify and record problems and initiate or recommend corrective action Notify Foreman when an area is ready for survey; coordinator shall re‑inspect the area Assist in development and maintenance of Process Control Procedures (PCPs) Production Planning Plan future work and provide input for production schedules Provide weekly updates Actively plan and implement production improvements Ensure efforts reach agreed milestone dates Qualifications / Knowledge / Experience Three (3) years of shipbuilding experience or five (5) years in a relevant field Practical understanding of ship fabrication or assembly Ability to schedule and monitor tasks Basic computer skills; Microsoft Outlook and Excel beneficial Experience in achieving schedule dates and budgets Willingness to travel; offsite travel may exceed 40% Employment Eligibility Guidelines 18 years of age or older at time of application Able to provide proof of US Person Status No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years of disposition No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years of disposition Willing to submit to a drug screen Willing to submit to a background check Physical Demands Must be able to tour vessels and work sites Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear Occasionally required to sit Lift/push/pull 50‑75 lbs occasionally; 20 lbs frequently Climb in a safe manner; work at heights above 12’ using ladders or scaffolding Work at varied levels (waist, eye, overhead) Use personal protective equipment per OSHA standards Withstand cold and hot temperatures; enter confined spaces Work Environment Regular exposure to humid conditions, bright flashing lights, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather conditions, extreme heat and cold. Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. Noise level usually above 90 dB. Compensation Salary range depends upon relevant experience: $36.37 – $50.87 per hour.
