Position Summary

We are seeking a 2nd Shift Machinist to work out of our Milwaukee Service Center. The Machinist sets up, adjusts, and operates large manual and computer-controlled machine tools to produce, repair, and finish large parts and components in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, and quality requirements. This role independently completes varied and complex machining assignments using established shop practices and determines appropriate setups, tooling, speeds, feeds, and operating sequences within the assigned scope. The position performs in-process and final dimensional inspections, completes required documentation, and identifies equipment, tooling, or quality concerns requiring corrective action or escalation. This role involves the setup, adjustment, and operation of various machine tools including vertical turning lathes, horizontal milling machines, engine lathes, radial drill presses, and grinders.

Essential Duties

• Set up, adjust, and operate assigned large manual and computer-controlled machine tools to produce or repair parts in accordance with engineering and quality requirements.
• Plan machining sequences, tooling arrangements, speeds, feeds, and work-holding methods for varied assignments using established shop practices.
• Lay out, align, secure, and machine large or irregular workpieces requiring difficult setups and advanced work-holding techniques.
• Operate manual lathes, vertical turning lathes, horizontal boring machines, mills, grinders, and other assigned equipment.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, dimensional requirements, and applicable work instructions.
• Manufacture, adapt, and sharpen tooling or attachments needed to complete assigned work.
• Identify and correct routine tooling problems, setup issues, dimensional discrepancies, and machine operating concerns.
• Use geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and applicable reference tables to calculate dimensions, angles, offsets, and machining requirements.
• Inspect work during and after machining using micrometers, indicators, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments.
• Complete required signoffs, inspection records, dimensional documentation, and work-execution records accurately and on time.
• Move and position large parts using approved rigging methods, overhead cranes, lift trucks, and related material-handling equipment.
• Perform equipment care and basic maintenance in accordance with established requirements.
• Provide task-level guidance to less-experienced employees on established machine operations, setups, safety requirements, and work practices.
• Escalate machining conditions, equipment problems, drawing discrepancies, or quality concerns that exceed the assigned scope or established methods.

Education and Required Experience

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Technical or trade-school training in machining, computer numerical control operation, conversational programming, or a related field preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in machining or machine-shop operations involving large or irregular workpieces.
• Experience setting up and operating manual lathes, vertical turning lathes, horizontal boring machines, mills, grinders, or comparable large machine tools required.
• Experience using precision measuring instruments and interpreting engineering drawings and dimensional requirements required.
• Experience with computer-controlled equipment or conversational programming preferred.
• Ability to use geometry, algebra, and trigonometric principles together with the use of engineering drawings, specifications, and tables.
• Skilled in interpreting complex blueprints and applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Ability to properly operate overhead crane and lift trucks.
• Judgment is needed for the difficult setups, and selection of tooling and fixturing.
• Ability to comprehend machining practices and techniques for fabricating generator and large turbine parts and components of various designs.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Distance vision and Ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to work in high, precarious places, and risk of shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme heat, extreme cold and wet, humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
