POLICE OFFICER Close/First Review Date: 09/06/2026 Work Location: District-wide Position Description POSITION SUMMARY The Police Officer reports to the Chief of Police in the DistrictPolice Department, to be assigned District-wide. This position is12 months per year position; 40 hours per week. Work hours andschedule will vary as needed. This position is represented by the California School EmployeesAssociation (CSEA), Chapter 363. POSITION PURPOSE Under the direction of Police Chief or assigned administrator, thePolice Officer performs law enforcement, security, traffic control,and public information duties that provide a safe environment forstudents, staff, and the general public while on District property.Incumbents protect District property by carrying out pro-activeprograms and traditional law enforcement procedures, and enforceCalifornia Vehicle Code, State Penal Code, Education code andDistrict regulations. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Patrol designated areas of the Community College District topreserve law and order. Discover and prevent the commission ofcrimes and enforces laws, regulations, and ordinances. Ensuresafety of students, staff, the general public, and Districtfacilities. Protect District property and facilities by making inspectionson foot and in a patrol vehicle. Check buildings for physicalsafety and security. Inspect and monitor the security of doors,windows and gates. Address any unusual or suspiciousactivity. Prevent entry and report presence of unauthorized persons ongrounds or in buildings. Investigate situations and disturbances asneeded. Apprehend suspects; make arrests, issue citations, andcontact local law enforcement agencies to transport suspects.Prepare investigative, crime, follow-up and incident reportsrelating to observed violations. Respond to complaints and hazardous situations. Conductinvestigations of reported injuries and accidents. Respond toincidents putting students, staff, and the general public at riskor harm. Interview victims, complaints and witnesses. Interrogatesuspects. Make arrests as necessary. Testify and present evidencein court. Participate in and may conduct a variety of criminalinvestigations involving crimes against persons and property, autotheft, and narcotics. Gather evidence and may prepare cases forprosecution. Provide security at District functions as required. Open andclose buildings and rooms for meetings. Direct traffic and controlparking and safe movement of vehicles in parking areas. Detect and report fire hazards. Extinguish small blazes andreport fires to the local Fire Department using establishedemergency communications protocols. Respond to fire and burglaralarms. Summon police and fire department personnel as needed.Direct traffic at fire, special events and other emergency orcongested situations. Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies inmatters relating to the apprehension of offenders and theinvestigation of offenses. Assure proper functioning of equipment. Notify designatedpersonnel regarding impaired equipment and malfunctions. Enhance day-to-day public relations by providing informationand assistance to students, staff, and the public in a way thatestablishes and maintain rapport with the college community. Answer questions from students, staff and the public concerninglocal and State laws, procedures and activities of the department.Provide information and responds to questions from students, staff,and the public. Perform other duties related to the job classification. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of: Methods, practices, and procedures of effective law enforcementincluding those used in patrol, crime prevention, traffic control,investigation, and identification. Pertinent federal, state, local, and District laws andordinances including applicable sections of the California PenalCode, State Education Code, Motor Vehicle Code, Health and SafetyCode, business and professional code, and laws related to the areaof responsibility. A thorough procedural understanding of criminal law and criminalprocedures with particular reference to the apprehension, arrestand custody of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies,including rules of evidence pertaining to the seizure andpreservation of evidence. Understanding of and skills at applying basic interviewing andinterrogation techniques. Use and maintenance of firearms, vehicle operations and safedriving practices, standard broadcasting procedures using a policeradio system, and crowd, vehicle and pedestrian control. Sufficient math skills to record distances, numbers, andtimes. Sufficient writing skill to prepare professional reports. Sufficient human relations skills to resolve confrontation,affect behavior of others, and convey a positive image of theorganization. Ability to: Perform all of the duties of the position effectively andefficiently with minimal supervision. Utilize all of the tools and equipment of the position in a safeand responsible manner. Analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine andtake effective action. Use appropriate defense measures to protect self or others inadverse situations. Meet standards of physical stature, endurance and agilityestablished by the District. Maintain two-way radio communication with local policeauthorities, District central dispatch, and administrators. Administer first aid in emergency situations. Communicate effectively with students, in a multi-ethnic settingand to interact both formally and informally with District staff,outside agency personnel and the general public. Required Qualifications: EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE A U.S. high school diploma, GED certificate, or high schoolequivalency certificate, or a two-year, four-year, or advanceddegree from an accredited or approved college/university (perCalifornia Government Code 1031(e)), AND Completion of at least an 884-hour California P.O.S.T. CertifiedBasic Law Enforcement Academy within the past three (3) yearsAND 2500 work hours with a P.O.S.T. accredited public safety agencywhich included verifiable filed of training,OR Possession of a valid Californian P.O.S.T BasicCertificate. Must be able to pass required background check for policedepartment personnel. License and Certificate: A valid California Driver's License. Current First Aid and CPR cards within a reasonable time afteremployment. Desired Qualifications: District's Diversity Requirements Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge and understanding of thediverse academic, socioeconomic, gender identity, sexualorientation, cultural, disability, and ethnic background of groupshistorically underrepresented, and groups who may have experienceddiscrimination. Success integrating diversity as appropriate into the majorduties outlined in the job description and in the duties listed inthe District's hiring policy; or demonstrated equivalenttransferable skills to do so. Salary Range: $107,945 - $131,696 Annual Salary (Range 118: Classified SalarySchedule Fiscal Year 2026-2027). Starting placement is generally atStep 1. Benefits: In addition to the salary, this position qualifies for the choiceof one of the District's excellent Health Benefits and Welfareplans, which the premium cost is 100% paid by the District for theemployee and their eligible dependents, and one health plan costingan estimated $60,000 for the District for fiscal year 2025-2026. Weoffer two medical plans (Anthem Blue Cross [PPO] and KaiserPermanente (HMO]); dental (Delta Dental PPO); vision (VSP Choice);life insurance for the employee (The Lincoln); life insurance foreligible dependents (The Lincoln); a long term disability/incomeprotection plan (The Lincoln); and an employee assistance plan(Anthem EAP). In addition, the District contributes an additional 26.81% of theemployee's salary towards an eligible employee's pension(CalPERS). Employees may also elect to participate in optional plans includingpurchasing additional life insurance for themselves and theireligible dependent(s); enroll in a medical, transportation, and/ordependent care Flexible Spending Account(s) (with the $4 monthlyadministrative fee paid by the District); and set pre-taxed dollarsaside to supplement their pension in a 403b (tax shelter annuity)and/or a 457 (deferred compensation) plan(s). Classified employees also earn 10 to 22 days per year of vacation(based on years of service), and up to 12 sick leave days(pro-rated for less than full-time positions). There are currently20 paid holidays.
