Per Diem Nurse Supervisor Position Summary At the Long Island State Veterans Home, Nurse Supervisors coordinate and supervise the care of residents on their assigned shift. They work closely with the Nurse/Manager(s) in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating resident care. Additionally, they collaborate with the In-service Coordinator, Infection Control, Wound Care Specialist, and Quality Assurance Coordinator to ensure that staff skill needs promote quality of resident care. Duties Provides and ensures nursing care to residents on the unit within the framework of the medical and nursing care plan, the Department’s policies, and under the supervision of a professional nurse. Monitors residents closely to identify responses to treatments, medication, and changes in health status; provides treatments according to the care plan and Department policies. Prepares and dispenses medication to residents according to the care plan and Department policies. Assists with residents’ activities of daily living, including direct care, observation of status, and supervision of non‑professional staff. Documents daily progress notes with all pertinent data, information, and observations; assists with weekly, monthly, and annual documentation describing resident status and care. Communicates immediately about changes or incidents to the supervisor, completing required documentation (incident/accident reports, infection control reports, 24‑hour supervisory report, shift report). Maintains policies and procedures related to medications, including controlled substance management. Communicates with supervisor, nursing staff, and other departments/disciplines all pertinent information and changes impacting resident care. Listens and responds appropriately to concerns expressed by residents and families. Ensures and provides direct care consistent with comprehensive assessment, resident requests, and plan goals. Works closely with other professionals and disciplines to ensure timely, coordinated care. Participates in the Department’s Quality Assurance Program and serves on committees related to resident care quality. Participates in orientation of new employees to the nursing unit and in the clinical in‑service education of non‑professional staff. Required Qualifications NYS Registered Nurse License. Clinical practice experience with an adult or aging population in a clinical setting. AAS degree. At least two years of supervisory experience in a health care facility. Preferred Qualifications Gerontology Certification. Working Conditions Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue, accidents, injuries, illness, unpredictable emergency situations, irregular hours, and pressure from multiple calls and inquiries. Requirements Prior to Start Date Successfully clear a background investigation. Complete a pre‑employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from the Employee Health Department. Complete an electronic reference check with at least three professional references. Provide a copy of the required license(s)/certification(s). Special Notes The facility is a tobacco‑free environment. Essential position: employees in such positions may be required to remain at work during emergencies. The facility operates 24/7 and all positions may require changes in shift days and hours. Respiratory protection may be required, which may prohibit facial hair.
