Cardiovascular and Thoracic Critical Care Unit Located in the new, state‑of‑the‑art North Carolina Surgical Hospital and part of the UNC Center for Heart and Vascular Care, this 40‑bed unit specializes in the care of critically ill patients with cardiothoracic and vascular disease. It is a fast‑paced, Beacon Award for Excellence‑designated unit. Key Features of the Unit Located within the advanced North Carolina Surgical Hospital Part of the renowned UNC Center for Heart and Vascular Care 40‑bed unit with a fast‑paced, high‑acuity environment Recognized with the Beacon Award for Excellence Provides expert care to patients with cardiothoracic and vascular conditions Common Surgical Procedures Include Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) Heart valve repairs and replacements Heart transplants and lung transplants Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implementation Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Aortic and thoracic aneurysm repairs Complex esophageal, thoracic, and vascular surgeries Position Summary CTCCU is currently accepting applications for a full‑time rotating position (36 hours/week). The role covers a 7am‑7pm/7pm‑7am shift schedule. An excellent benefits package is offered and the position qualifies for incentives to eligible applicants. Responsibilities Education – Participate in identifying and meeting learning needs, attend education programs, use patient education materials, assess patient/family readiness, and evaluate developmental level. Evaluation of Care – Identify expected patient outcomes, seek guidance on care plan revision, participate in interdisciplinary discussions, and communicate relevant information to promote continuity of care. Implementation – Demonstrate competence in caring for patients with complex problems, perform bedside point‑of‑care testing, use organizational and nursing standards, policies, and procedures, organize and prioritize care, and consult with resources for complex cases. Leadership – Develop goals for professional growth, achieve objectives, facilitate collaboration, participate in unit goal and performance improvement activities, use communication systems effectively, promote cost‑effective care, and foster a safe, clean, and secure environment. Patient Assessment – Recognize data from complex situations to determine priorities, incorporate physical, psychosocial, educational and safety needs, synthesize assessment data, and anticipate discharge needs. Planning – Collaborate with patients/families to prepare or update plans of care, use multidisciplinary resources, communicate clearly, address cultural and ethnic issues, and prioritize tasks for complex problems. Research – Read relevant journals, bring ideas to staff assessment, and evaluate applicability to practice. Education Requirements Graduation from a school of professional nursing. If hired after January 6, 2014, must be enrolled within four years of employment and obtain a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Nursing within seven years of employment date. Licensure/Certification Requirements Registered Nurse licence in North Carolina. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification. Professional Experience Requirements One (1) year of nursing experience.
