Job Description
Safety Director – Construction
\nLocation: Baltimore, MD Area
\nEmployment Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire
\nCompensation: $140,000 – $180,000 Annually
\nSchedule: Monday – Friday | 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
\nTravel: Local jobsite travel with occasional overnight, evening, and weekend requirements
\n \nAbout the Opportunity
\nWe are partnering with an established and growing construction organization seeking an experienced, hands-on Safety Director to lead and strengthen safety initiatives across a diverse portfolio of commercial construction and heavy civil/infrastructure projects.
\nThis is an exciting opportunity for a proactive safety professional who thrives in the field, enjoys working directly with construction crews, and takes pride in creating a culture where safety is a shared responsibility.
\n \nWe are looking for a DOER, not a delegator. The ideal candidate is someone who leads by example, regularly walks active jobsites, builds strong relationships with field personnel, and takes a proactive approach to identifying and resolving safety concerns.
\nThis individual will have the autonomy to drive safety initiatives, improve existing processes, and make a measurable impact across the organization.
\n \nKey Responsibilities
\n- \n
- Lead and oversee company-wide safety programs across commercial construction, heavy civil, and infrastructure operations. \n
- Maintain a consistent, visible presence at active jobsites, working directly with superintendents, foremen, and field crews to promote safe work practices. \n
- Conduct routine jobsite inspections, safety audits, hazard assessments, and compliance reviews. \n
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve safety policies, procedures, training programs, and preventative measures. \n
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, MOSHA, and all applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations. \n
- Lead accident and incident investigations, root-cause analyses, reporting, and corrective-action initiatives. \n
- Oversee workers' compensation matters and coordinate appropriate responses to workplace injuries and incidents. \n
- Deliver safety training, toolbox talks, educational sessions, and ongoing field coaching. \n
- Identify potential hazards related to equipment, fall protection, traffic control, and active construction operations. \n
- Collaborate with project managers and field leadership to address safety concerns while supporting operational efficiency. \n
- Mentor and provide guidance to additional safety personnel while remaining actively involved in day-to-day field operations. \n
- Maintain accurate safety documentation, inspection reports, and compliance records using digital reporting tools. \n
- Evaluate emerging safety practices, technologies, and training opportunities to continuously strengthen company-wide safety performance. \n
- Foster a positive, accountable safety culture built on communication, education, prevention, and employee engagement. \n
Qualifications & Experience
\n- \n
- 7–10+ years of progressive construction safety experience , including significant hands-on field involvement. \n
- OSHA 30 and OSHA 500 certifications required. \n
- Strong experience in general contracting, heavy civil, highway, or infrastructure construction. \n
- Experience supporting commercial and vertical construction projects is highly preferred. \n
- Demonstrated expertise in jobsite inspections, hazard identification, incident investigations, and corrective-action planning. \n
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA/MOSHA regulations and construction safety standards. \n
- Experience developing and delivering safety training programs and working directly with construction crews. \n
- First Aid/CPR certification and traffic control/MOT training or certification required. \n
- Knowledge of fall protection, equipment safety, and construction-related risk management. \n
- Experience supporting workers' compensation and injury management processes. \n
- Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence employees at all organizational levels. \n
- Comfortable utilizing Microsoft Office, electronic safety reporting platforms, and digital documentation tools. \n
- Ability to travel between regional jobsites and occasionally support evening, overnight, or weekend operations. \n
- Bachelor's degree preferred but not required; relevant construction safety experience is highly valued. \n
What Makes Someone Successful in This Role?
\n- \n
- Hands-On Leadership: You prefer being on a jobsite, engaging with crews, and solving problems firsthand rather than managing safety exclusively from behind a desk. \n
- Relationship Builder: You know how to earn the respect of field personnel and communicate safety expectations without creating an enforcement-only environment. \n
- Proactive Mindset: You identify risks before they become incidents and consistently look for ways to improve safety performance. \n
- Ownership & Accountability: You take initiative, follow through, and are confident making decisions and driving meaningful change. \n
- Adaptability: You are comfortable supporting multiple projects, balancing priorities, and working across different construction environments. \n
- Continuous Improvement: You stay informed on evolving safety regulations, training methods, and industry best practices. \n
Compensation & Benefits
\n- \n
- Competitive base salary of $140,000 – $180,000 , depending on experience and qualifications. \n
- Comprehensive medical and prescription coverage with traditional copay and HSA plan options. \n
- Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) options. \n
- Voluntary dental and vision coverage. \n
- Employer-provided basic life and AD&D insurance, with additional voluntary coverage options. \n
- Short-term and long-term disability coverage options. \n
- Voluntary accident and critical illness insurance. \n
- 401(k) retirement plan. \n
- Paid time off, including personal leave, sick and safe leave, and paid holidays. \n
- Company-provided vehicle and gas card. \n
- Professional development and continuing education opportunities. \n
Why Consider This Opportunity?
\nThis is an opportunity to take ownership of a safety program while remaining closely connected to the people and projects that make construction happen.
\nOur client values individuals who lead from the front, bring new ideas to the table, and understand that successful safety programs are built through trust, accountability, and consistent field engagement.
\n \nIf you're an experienced construction safety leader who would rather be in boots on a jobsite than behind a desk all day, we'd love to connect!
