Maintenance Mechanic

Position Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and improving production, packaging, processing, and utility equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and uninterrupted plant operations. This role supports manufacturing activities by performing preventative and corrective maintenance while adhering to safety, quality, food safety, and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure the reliable operation of production, packaging, processing, and utility equipment through preventative and corrective maintenance activities.
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and operational issues and perform repairs as needed.
• Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and emergency maintenance situations to minimize downtime.
• Read and interpret technical procedures, electrical schematics, service manuals, blueprints, and work orders.
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance activities, including computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) work orders and equipment inspections.
• Monitor and analyze equipment performance data, SPC charts, and maintenance records to identify improvement opportunities.
• Support and maintain manufacturing support systems, including lubrication delivery, chemical delivery, ingredient delivery, and utility systems.
• Utilize hand tools, power tools, electric meters, testing devices, and material handling equipment safely and effectively.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair logs, and required documentation in accordance with company procedures and SOPs.
• Communicate equipment issues, repair status, and operational concerns with production personnel, supervisors, and management.
• Assist with maintaining maintenance parts inventories and spare component stock levels.
• Participate in equipment installations, upgrades, modifications, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Follow all GMP, food safety, sanitation, and quality requirements.
• Comply with all safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space, machine guarding, and required PPE protocols.
• Report food safety, product quality, and operational concerns immediately to management.
• Stay current on new technologies, equipment, maintenance practices, and industry developments.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Technical school certification, vocational training, or equivalent maintenance experience preferred.
• Minimum 2+ years of industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing, food processing, packaging, or production environment preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills.
• Working knowledge of electrical systems, motors, controls, pneumatics, hydraulics, and conveyors.
• Ability to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals.
• Experience with preventative maintenance programs and computerized maintenance systems.
• Understanding of GMP, food safety, and quality standards preferred.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and reach throughout the entire shift.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
• Ability to work in wet, humid, and variable temperature environments.
• Ability to work around moving mechanical equipment and moderate to high noise levels.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.

Work Environment

This position operates within a manufacturing and food production environment and requires strict adherence to safety, food safety, quality, and sanitation standards. The Maintenance Mechanic must be available to respond to equipment failures and support production needs as required, including overtime, weekends, and emergency call-ins when necessary.
