Senior Mainframe Infrastructure Engineer

We are a staffing agency partnering with a leading enterprise organization to build and operate IT hardware and software resources in on-premises, cloud, and hybrid scenarios.

Role summary / purpose

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you will be responsible for building, designing, and operating enterprise IT infrastructure resources to support internal customer needs. You will work on a wide variety of activities that operationalize cross-functional teams, including capacity planning, resource optimization, server configuration and maintenance, virtualized environment creation, and analytics services.

Key responsibilities

• Design, operate, and maintain enterprise servers including specialty mainframe systems, high-performance computing systems, and general-purpose hybrid and cloud systems for optimal end-user business operations.
• Research, design, implement, and maintain complex infrastructure solutions for internal customer needs such as specialty software, data warehouses, identity access management, event frameworks, containerization, and on-demand scaling.
• Design and configure secure virtualized environments aligned with enterprise architecture blueprints, including virtual machines, virtual networks, high-speed and distributed storage systems.
• Define and maintain hardware components using industry-standard configuration management tools and connectivity mapping solutions.
• Analyze and determine hardware configurations to distribute I/O across mainframes, storage systems, and data centers.
• Design, install, and maintain mainframe cable infrastructure and fiber networks.
• Coordinate and plan all hardware installations, de-installations, and microcode upgrades.
• Monitor, track, and diagnose hardware failures across all mainframe computer systems and peripheral devices.
• Provide prompt problem determination and implement immediate corrective action in the event of hardware failures.
• Schedule and supervise hardware maintenance activities and coordinate with hardware suppliers during equipment installation and placement.
• Provide 24x7x365 on-call support for hardware failures and configuration launches.
• Coordinate hardware activities with cross-functional teams including Network Operations and Facilities.
• Coordinate changes with storage and software teams when planning and implementing new hardware and configurations.
• Participate in Facility Planning meetings and support data center transition and consolidation efforts.
• Participate in Disaster Recovery planning and testing and serve as technical liaison for equipment installation.
• Lead cross-functional teams and drive results on infrastructure projects.
• Utilize existing tools or assist in engineering custom monitoring solutions to ensure systems are configured correctly, run efficiently, and remain secure.
• Monitor and review resources such as CPU, memory, storage, and network traffic to ensure effective utilization and safeguard against runaway costs.
• Resolve bottlenecks and plan for future capacity needs based on resource usage trends.
• Advise enterprise architecture teams on usage trends to incorporate into future blueprints.

Requirements - education & experience

• 10 years of experience in IT infrastructure
• 8 years of experience in development
• Practical experience in 2 coding languages or advanced practical experience in 1 language
• Senior-level engineering background
