About the Position Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) provides limited psychiatric services for CSUEB students. Psychiatric services include diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic psychiatric illness. Chronic psychiatric illness may require referral to community resources for more extensive follow-up and treatment. The Psychiatrist is expected to obtain a detailed intake assessment, as well as to order appropriate laboratory tests and pharmaceutical agents as required to support diagnostic evaluations. In addition, the Psychiatrist is expected to be knowledgeable about other services within Student Health and Counseling, on campus, and in the community, and to make referrals when appropriate. Reporting to the Director of Counseling Services, the Psychiatrist performs assigned psychiatric diagnostic treatment and psychotherapeutic activities within the scope of their license and board certification. The Psychiatrist works in collaboration with clinicians of Student Health and Counseling Services, which includes Physicians, Nurse Practitioners and Counselors. Providers consult regularly as part of a team effort to coordinate appropriate care. PLEASE NOTE: This is a 10/12 position with the months of June and July off. Benefits eligibility and earnings may be impacted if a candidate is unable to work through the entirety of the 10/12 appointment. Classification: Physician - Specialty Services Responsibilities: General Psychiatric Medicine Provide psychiatric consultations. Assess, diagnose and treat acute and chronic psychiatric disorders. Complete psychiatric evaluations; take detailed histories including inquiry into family history, social history, functional/work history, habits/substance use. Ensure that other medical conditions and their treatment are considered in the evaluations. Ensure appropriate lab and other studies are ordered and results are checked and followed. Discuss diagnosis and treatment with the patient. Follow up with patients as appropriate. Recognize and make referrals for problems outside field of expertise when needed. Handle psychiatric emergencies and crises along with SHCS team, including patients who are unstable or may be dangerous to themselves or others. Collaborate with University Police Department for 5150’s as needed. Serve students with a range of psychiatric conditions within scope of experience and practice. This includes but is not limited to evaluation and treatment of eating disorders, attention deficit disorder, and substance abuse. Record, complete, and chart daily into electronic medical records. Non-clinical duties Meet with other providers to consult on patient care as needed. Meet regularly with Lead Counselor to coordinate referrals. Participate in health education projects when appropriate. This may include developing content for outreach or participating directly in programs to increase awareness of healthy habits and SHCS services. Consult with campus faculty and staff on mental health topics as needed. Participate in SHCS committees, as needed. Seek to develop and maintain effective relationships with relevant departments and community agencies in order to foster strategic aims of SHCS and California State University, East Bay. Administrative duties and other duties as assigned Participate in relevant SHCS meetings, in-service trainings, and accreditation projects. Propose and prepare studies and reports to assess service efficacy and promote quality improvement. Participate in mutual chart review with other Psychiatrists within Cal State system, once each semester. Participate in Division and campus events, meetings, and projects as requested. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of and the ability to effectively and efficiently apply the current principles and methods of general psychiatry, essential to the diagnosis and treatment of medical and/or mental health disorders. Understanding of available community resources and how to use them for referral or medical and/or mental health care treatment in the specialty, beyond the scope of SHCS practice. General knowledge of local, state, and national laws and regulations as well as a thorough knowledge of medical association professional ethics and standards and patient privacy. Ability to serve as a mentor and resource consultant to SHCS personnel. Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, SHCS staff, and university community within a diverse multicultural environment. Experience and Education: Graduation from a medical school and completion of one or more residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned specialty duties. License and Certification Requirements: Physicians - Specialty Services must possess* and maintain A valid license to practice medicine in the State of California. Current board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty or subspecialty appropriate for their assigned specialty duties. A valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances. Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties. *Note: In accordance with Executive Order 943 a physician can be given clinical privileges pending initial certification, but must be board certified as soon as possible, but no later than two years after the date of hire. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential dutysatisfactorily. Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with students, staff, faculty and external agencies. Working knowledge or the ability to quickly learn, apply and conform to a variety of state, federal, CSU, and CSUEB regulations, laws, policies and procedures. Strong oral and written communication skills to communicate with patients, SHCS staff and the campus community. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills. Familiarity with the scope of psychotropic medications available, including knowledge of the indications, risks, limitations, dosing, side effects, drug interactions and follow up of each medication prescribed. Familiar with other treatment modalities such as therapy. Ability to provide accurate psychiatric diagnosis and treatment. Ability to analyze emergency psychiatric situations and provide the necessary interventions. Ability to participate in SHCS committees as required. Ability to provide lead work direction to professional and ancillary personnel. Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate an assigned, on-going clinical program with specific regard to mental health disorders. Ability to prepare comprehensive intake case histories.Ability to work evenings and weekends for occasional campus programs, when needed. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Three (3) additional years of specialized training in the field of psychiatry. Minimum of one year of experience in the practice of psychiatry after completion of a psychiatry residency program. Certification as a Board Diplomate in the specialty of psychiatry.
