Shipboard Electrical and Mechanical Technician

This role focuses on the installation, repair, overhaul, and operational testing of shipboard electrical and mechanical systems in support of a Refueling Complex Overhaul program. The technician works primarily on naval ventilation and associated systems, ensuring they operate safely, reliably, and in accordance with technical standards and maintenance procedures.

Responsibilities

• Install, repair, overhaul, and perform operational testing of electrical systems aboard ships in support of Refueling Complex Overhaul activities.
• Troubleshoot and repair shipboard ventilation systems, including cooling coils, preheaters, and ventilation ducting, to restore and maintain optimal performance.
• Interpret and accurately follow engineering drawings and schematics for chill water, ventilation, and steam systems to complete maintenance and installation tasks.
• Support mechanical work such as overhaul, repair, removal, installation, and inspection of components, including flanges and fittings.
• Perform and support hydrostatic testing, corrosion assessment, and the repair or replacement of constant flow regulators, solenoids, temperature regulating valves, and isolation valves.
• Apply knowledge of Mechanical Technical Work Documents to ensure all tasks meet required standards and documentation practices.
• Use US Navy 3-M (material, maintenance, and management) processes and documentation, including NSTM 300, the Navy Tag-out User Manual, and the 3-M manual, to plan, execute, and document maintenance.
• Mentor, train, and teach coworkers and shipboard personnel on proper maintenance procedures and best practices, with the goal of enabling them to perform preventative maintenance independently.
• Conduct preventative maintenance on pumps, motors, and other mechanical and electrical components to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
• Read and work from prints, technical manuals, and work packages to complete tasks accurately and efficiently.
• Perform structural and steel welding as required, including carbon steel welding in vertical and horizontal positions, in accordance with shipyard standards.
• Support inspection and testing activities, including those subject to X-ray or other non-destructive examination, to verify weld and structural integrity.
• Troubleshoot complex system issues by systematically identifying root causes and implementing effective corrective actions.
• Collaborate with other shipyard and shipboard personnel to coordinate work, maintain safety, and ensure adherence to established procedures and tag-out requirements.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, including maintenance actions, inspections, and test results, in accordance with applicable processes and documentation standards.

Essential Skills

• Hands-on experience with the installation, repair, overhaul, and operational testing of shipboard electrical systems.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings for chill water, ventilation, and steam systems.
• Experience with naval or similar mechanical ventilation systems, including understanding of airflow, ducting, and associated components.
• Knowledge of Mechanical Technical Work Documents and their use in overhaul, repair, removal, installation, and inspection activities.
• Hands-on experience performing flange and fitting inspections, hydrostatic testing, and corrosion assessments.
• Proficiency in the repair and replacement of constant flow regulators, solenoids, temperature regulating valves, and isolation valves.
• Hands-on experience with US Navy 3-M processes and documentation or equivalent maintenance systems, including NSTM 300, the Navy Tag-out User Manual, and the 3-M manual.
• Demonstrated experience mentoring, training, or teaching coworkers and customers in maintenance procedures and system operations.
• Hands-on experience troubleshooting and repairing shipboard ventilation systems, including cooling coils, preheaters, and ventilation ducting.
• Experience with structural welding, including steel and carbon steel welding in vertical and horizontal positions.
• Familiarity with X-ray or other non-destructive examination requirements for weld quality and structural integrity.
• Experience working in a shipyard or similar industrial environment performing mechanical and electrical maintenance.
• Ability to perform troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and repair on pumps, motors, and related equipment.
• Capability to align technical skills and experience with defined trade levels and expectations, as validated through a technical interview.

• Shipyard experience supporting complex refit, overhaul, or refueling projects.
• Experience working under structured maintenance programs that mirror or align with US Navy 3-M systems.
• Comfort working from detailed prints, technical manuals, and work packages in a highly regulated environment.
• Strong communication and coaching skills to effectively train shipboard personnel in preventative maintenance.
• Ability to work safely under tag-out and lockout procedures in accordance with established standards.
• Flexibility to support evolving project needs and to take on a range of electrical, mechanical, and welding tasks as required.

Work Environment

This position is based in a shipyard or similar industrial setting, working aboard ships undergoing Refueling Complex Overhaul. The work involves hands-on tasks with electrical, mechanical, and ventilation systems, as well as structural and carbon steel welding in vertical and horizontal positions. You will work around pumps, motors, and other rotating equipment, using technical drawings, prints, and formal maintenance documentation. The environment includes typical shipyard conditions such as confined spaces, elevated work areas, and exposure to industrial noise and equipment. Work hours may align with project schedules and shipyard operations, requiring flexibility to support critical milestones and testing activities.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Newport News, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $28.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
