The APP will provide comprehensive clinical management for patients on the inpatient stroke services (no ICU) and work closely with attending physicians, fellows, residents, and medical students to deliver high‑quality, evidence‑based acute stroke care. Schedule: Monday‑Friday, 4×10‑hour days (day off to be determined) with possible occasional weekends. No nights or on‑call required. Responsibilities Provide direct patient care for individuals admitted to the primary stroke service, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management. Flex to support stroke consult services as needed based on patient volume and program priorities, including running inpatient stroke codes. Assist with the management of medically complex stroke patients. Lead efforts on efficient patient throughput, including admissions, transfers, and discharges. Assist the team by coordinating consults, multidisciplinary care, and discharge planning. Ensure smooth transitions of care across inpatient and outpatient settings. Ensure accurate documentation and adherence to stroke protocols to support accreditation. Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to stroke care outcomes and compliance. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members including attendings, fellows, and residents. Essential Functions Demonstrates clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities which may include diagnosis and management of a wide range of health problems. Responsible for the health outcome of an assigned patient population. Confers with collaborating physicians and other health professionals in the area of clinical expertise. Develops appropriate educational systems for patients, families and staff in areas of expertise. Mentors graduate students in aspects of advanced practice and patient care. Actively participates in quality improvement and/or research pertinent to the area of expertise. Additional Responsibilities Conduct comprehensive appraisals of patients' health status by taking health histories and performing physical examinations. Provide direct clinical care to patients. Prescribe/orders medications, therapies; order/interprets laboratory tests, x‑rays and procedures according to clinical privileges. Evaluate patients to determine their need for further health care. Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families. Document in the medical record all care and education provided and/or procedures performed. Refer to other disciplines as appropriate. Consult with other disciplines in areas of expertise. Integrate research‑based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision making. Exemplify a professional image in appearance, manner and presentation. Advocate for patients, families, coworkers and the community. Maintain certifications and continuing education as required for licensure and privileging. Serve as a patient advocate and role model for “Patients First”. Participate in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees/task forces as appropriate. Provide comprehensive teaching strategies for patients and their families. Develop and participate in programs to meet continuing education needs of staff. Serve as a role model and preceptor to students. Provide formal education to both internal and external groups pertinent to area of specialty. Participate in quality improvement and/or research initiatives for specific patient population as appropriate. Qualifications Required Master’s degree from an accredited school of nursing or a Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program. Acute care certification required for APRNs. Current license as a Registered Nurse in Illinois and, if APRN, current license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in Illinois. Certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by a national certifying body approved by the Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board. Privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association. Neurology rotation/experience; inpatient rotations/experience. Preferred 2 years of APP experience.
