Mental Health Counselor (Bronx)

Mental Health Counselor (Bronx) Gersh Autism has empowered students on the autism spectrum for over 30 years. Serving individuals aged 5‑21 across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, our network of K‑12 schools provides personalized education, speech, physical, occupational therapy, and vocational training. We collaborate closely with families to foster academic, social, and emotional growth, preparing students for future success. We are seeking an energetic, nurturing, and confident mental health counselor to conduct assessments, develop individualized treatment plans, lead team and group therapy sessions, facilitate preventive wellness classes and workshops, and coordinate referrals. The ideal candidate will create a healthy, safe, and caring environment and provide emotional and social support to young adults. Responsibilities Counsel students to articulate their feelings and understand their behavior causes and effects. Encourage and coach students in healthy coping strategies for negative emotions. Guide students in developing skills and strategies to manage challenges. Develop and implement treatment plans based on clinical knowledge and experience. Monitor medication use and perform crisis interventions as needed. Advocate for students by coordinating required services and resolving emergency situations. Adjust treatment activities as students’ status changes. Evaluate counseling program effectiveness and progress toward objectives. Collaborate with families, other healthcare providers, and community resources to support students. Maintain confidentiality of student records and complete required paperwork. Physical Requirements Keep students safe, including implementing CPI (therapeutic holds) when necessary. Remove oneself or others from potentially harmful situations promptly. Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and move throughout the workday. Lift up to 65 pounds and physically support students of varying sizes if needed. Perform duties under stress, including behavioral escalations. Exercise sound judgment in high‑pressure or safety‑sensitive situations. Work effectively as part of a team and maintain professional relationships. Multi‑task and shift priorities quickly. Qualifications Minimum of one year of relevant experience. Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Mental Health Counselor, or Psychologist (LSMW, LCSW, LMHC). Extensive knowledge of therapeutic techniques and interventions. Experience with therapeutic modalities for young adults/adults, including trauma assessment and treatment. Experience working with adults or young adults on the autism spectrum. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
