ROAD AND BRIDGE CLASS IV/PRECINCT 3

The Road and Bridge Department’s mission is to offer a responsive public service while executing high-quality maintenance on roads, bridges, and county rights-of-way to improve mobility and the quality of life for the constituent’s precinct. There are four precincts in Kaufman County. The four elected commissioners and an elected county judge serve as members of the Kaufman County Commissioners Court, the administrative head of the county’s government. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (NOTE: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.) Responsible for scheduled maintenance on assigned equipment. Assist with construction projects including concrete and asphalt. Reports any issues immediately to the Foreman May supervise the work of a work crew on a project basis as the lead person. Road stabilizing by use of lime, cement, or another chemical agent, combined or mixed in. Performs maintenance for chip seal, with surface treatment of asphalt emulsion and crushed rock. Shovel, smooth, lift, push, pull, and carry asphalt materials. Installation, maintenance, repair, changing, or renewal of culvert system. Conveying water from one side of a roadway to the other Analyze corrosion, abrasion, cracks, and problems with joints or seams to avoid obstructing the flow of water. Repair potholes, sinkholes, and street curbs Set flags and barricades for traffic control. Safely direct traffic through work or construction sites for long periods as a flagger. Blow and clean ditches and inlets Performs routine service and maintenance. Uses chainsaws to cut and remove brush and debris from streets, rights of way, and alleys. Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment before and after use. Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as deemed necessary for certain locations. Attends work on a continuous and regular basis. Other duties may include, but are not limited to: Operate a mower or rake to remove grass from roads and rights of way or debris from roadways. Use shovels, rakes, and other maintenance equipment as directed. Performs other job-related duties as directed by supervisor(s). Must adhere to Federal, State, County, and local ordinances. CERTIFICATIONS/REQUIRMENTS: High School diploma or GED equivalent. A valid Texas Driver’s License (required) Texas Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Knowledge of: Complex public works equipment. Traffic and other regulations governing the use of equipment throughout the County. Occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in equipment operation. Apply knowledge of driving laws and roadway construction. Perform pre-trip visual safety inspection of vehicles and heavy equipment, including checking fluid levels and tires, maintaining vehicle cleanliness, and performing routine maintenance. Specialized in all light and at least four (4) heavy equipment including but not limited to: Dump Trucks Roller. Boom Axe Loader Excavators Front-end loader and backhoe Graders Gradall excavators Jack Hammers Maintainers Water Trucks Basic computer skills include but are not limited to checking email, time-entry, and online training. Ability to: Make emergency repairs to motor-driven equipment. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Work independently and under stressful conditions. Interact effectively with others. Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Skilled in: Safe operation of flatbed and dump trucks, tractors, mowing attachments, and less complex construction equipment. The work environment characteristics described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in outside weather conditions, occasionally work near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to fumes and airborne particles.
