About The Job The surgical technologist in the first scrub role handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. What You’ll Do Preoperative Duties: Donning OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE). Gathering, checking, and opening supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure. Performing the surgical scrub, and donning gowns and gloves. Setting up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure. Performing the initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator. Assisting the team members with gowning and gloving. Assisting with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field. Participating in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure. Securing tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories. Intraoperative Duties: Preparing and anticipating additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies or usage during the procedure. Anticipating the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedure. Measuring and passing medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure. Holding retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon. Sponging or suctioning the operative site. Applying electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleeders held by surgeon. Cutting suture material as directed by the surgeon. Maintaining the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure. Recognizing early warning signs and responding appropriately when a situation begins to deteriorate. Performing additional counts as necessary. Preparing sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices. Preparing and passing off specimens as appropriate. Sub‑specimen handling: Submitting, documenting, and transporting specimens as needed, ensuring patient label is accurate with the correct patient, medical record number and date of birth. Cleansing and preparing instruments for terminal sterilization. Assisting other members of the team with terminal cleaning of the room. Assisting in prepping the OR for the next patient. Participating in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care. Other surgical cases or surgical equipment that may be used: Performing a cystoscopy Assembling / disassembling scope White balancing camera or connecting fluid tubing to scope Emergency hysterectomy Postpartum hemorrhage management Dilation and curettage Dilation and evacuation Cerclage Vaginal laceration repairs Postpartum salpingectomies Other duties performed as needed/requested when not scrubbed into a case: Maintaining operating rooms in a safe and efficient manner ensuring constant readiness for use. Assisting in the transfers of patients to another unit/department via bed, wheelchair or other assistive modality as requested. Participating in admitting a patient in the electronic medical record, bringing patient to the room and orienting patient to surroundings. Maintaining and cleaning equipment as well as instrumentation ensuring that it is in working condition. Maintaining the orderliness of the work area, keeping hallways clear of excess equipment. Setting up Delivery Tables using sterile technique. Cleansing and removing instruments; assisting in breaking down Delivery table and placing specimens in appropriate locations. Maintaining established par levels of patient care supplies in patient rooms and medication rooms. Ensuring completion of daily task list. Who You Are Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist Program National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Certification (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) certification Associate’s degree preferred Medical Technician License from the State of New Hampshire unless other current NH state license is held.
