Young Playwrights Project Teaching Artist/Actor (Chautauqua Arts Education)/Seasonal Employment

Description This part‑time, seasonal position serves as a Teaching Artist in the Chautauqua Arts Education Young Playwrights Project (YPP). The role involves school visits, leading volunteer rehearsals, and performing in student productions. Responsibilities Implement the program curriculum as directed by the Director of Arts Education and the Lead Teaching Artist, including presenting scripted and improvisational work in school assemblies and leading classes through the playwriting process. Lead volunteer play reading groups during rehearsals and school visits. Coordinate processing of plays for reading groups, typing handwritten scripts. Act in the Phase 3 performances and collaborate with the company on props, costumes, and set design. Compensation $23.05 per hour. Travel to and from Chautauqua Institution is reimbursed, as are travel costs within Chautauqua County specific to school visits. Required Experience Experience teaching theater to youth programs. Acting experience. Formal training in theater arts. Experience with theater improvisation. Skills & Abilities Collaboration and strong teamwork. Adopts a "Yes and" approach to creative collaboration. Supervision & Guidance Teaching Artists will be trained and supported by the Director of Arts Education. Program implementation and development will be coordinated in collaboration between the Teaching Artist and the Director of Arts Education. Schedule Flexible schedules are offered for seasonal employment during spring and summer operations. Schedules typically include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Approximate weekly hours for each phase: Phase 1 & 2 school visits: 30–40 hours per week. Pre‑Phase 1 & 2 play preparation: 10–20 hours per week. Phase 3: 30–40 hours per week. Schedule Details Phase 1 School Visits: January 12–16, 2026 Play Preparation for Phase 2: February 27 – March 20, 2026 Phase 2 on‑site rehearsals and school visits: March 20 – April 2, 2026 Play selection process: March 25 – May 1, 2026 Phase 3 production needs shared with Arts Ed staff: May 1–7, 2026 Phase 3 on‑site rehearsals and performances: June 13–18, 2026 Living on the Grounds Chautauqua Institution may provide limited housing options on the grounds or assist with nearby accommodations. Housing is not guaranteed and may incur personal cost. Remote work may be available for certain play preparation activities.
