Position Summary The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University is seeking Veterinary Assistants and Veterinary Technicians to join our new veterinary program and teaching hospital, to serve within our ambulatory Shelter Medicine and Community Engagement (SMCE) service. The main teaching hospital is located 1.5 miles from our main Glassboro campus. The SMCE consists of a mobile RV style clinic based out of the veterinary teaching hospital, and a satellite spay neuter clinic located in Clayton, NJ, which is 12 minutes from main campus. Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine is a new and innovative veterinary teaching hospital for small animals, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. The teaching hospital is designed to accommodate multiple specialty departments, including anesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, dentistry and oral surgery, diagnostic imaging, emergency/critical care, exotics, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, primary care, and a full pharmacy with sterile compounding capabilities. These Positions Will Support The Clinical Services In The Shelter Medicine And Community Engagement Section Serving Patients In Animal Shelters And In Underserved And Marginalized Communities Throughout Southern NJ While Educating Our Students. Reporting Structure The Veterinary Assistants and Veterinary Technicians will report directly to the Veterinary Technician Manager. Required Qualifications & Salary Information The starting rate for each level is equivalent to the probationary rate listed below based on the collective bargaining unit guidelines. After completion of a six-month probationary period, the employee's pay can increase to the “Job Rate” for that position. Depending on experience, the candidate may be hired at the "Job Rate" to start. This position is with an ambulatory service and a valid driver’s license, and reliable personal mode of transportation is required. Employees must have 4+ years of applicable experience to be hired above the probationary rate per the collective bargaining agreement. Preferred Qualifications Willing to work flexible hours (days, swing) and weekends as needed in variable locations. Previous experience working in a teaching environment. Previous experience working in a shelter medicine practice, access to care or HQHVSN surgical setting. Adaptable to a fast-growing and developing workplace. Experience or comfort driving an RV or oversized vehicle. Excellent understanding of medical terminology, medications, calculations, and common surgical procedures. Excellence and interest in further developing interpersonal skills in relation to co‑workers, clinicians, students, staff, and clients. Working Conditions Hazards Veterinary workers may be exposed to hazards like slips, trips, and falls. They may also be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces and urine. When working with animals that are frightened or in pain, veterinary workers risk being bitten, kicked, or scratched. Veterinary workers may be exposed to hazards like bloodborne pathogens, hazardous drugs, radiation, toxic waste, and chemical hazards such as disinfectants, pesticides, and latex. Animals The types of animals treated at a veterinary hospital can affect the working conditions. Our teaching hospital may consist, but is not limited to, the following types of animals: small mammals, large mammals, livestock, reptiles, avians, and other exotic animals. Travel This section of the teaching hospital is an ambulatory service. Work locations may vary and a valid driver’s license with a reliable personal method of transportation is required. Outdoor Settings Some working locations or community-based events may involve working outdoors for portions of or all the work day.
