Job Description
Job Title: Embedded Triage Engineer
Job Description
The Embedded Triage Engineer evaluates performance data and test results from on-road and simulation testing to identify, investigate, and communicate issues within complex embedded and autonomous driving systems. This role focuses on system triage, defect tracking, impact analysis, and counterfactual simulations to support safe and reliable operation of advanced driver assistance and autonomous vehicle technologies. The engineer collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to provide timely, data-driven feedback that improves software quality, system robustness, and overall safety in large-scale, safety-critical environments.
Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive triage of system anomalies and test escapes, including initial classification of issues and escalation for deeper investigation when needed.
- Conduct root cause analysis of embedded and autonomous system issues using sensor data, logs, and other diagnostic information.
- Leverage 3D visualization tools to analyze sensor data and uncover complex software and hardware issues, identifying patterns and root causes.
- Report on software quality using metrics such as defect ratios and software heatmaps, and communicate trends and risks to development and leadership teams.
- Analyze autonomous vehicle behavior from public road and closed-course testing, including scenarios involving trucks, lane routing, lane line detection, and obstacle handling.
- Utilize simulation tools to identify new edge-case scenarios, export them into datasets, and support the expansion and improvement of reinforcement learning and training models.
- Perform counterfactual simulations of selected events and share critical analysis with Safety, System Verification & Validation, and Machine Learning teams to mitigate unsafe system behaviors.
- Collaborate on requirements for tools that support efficient triage, root cause analysis, metric reporting, and data visualization, with a focus on quickly extracting insights about software maturity.
- Maintain and optimize the defect management process, including defining and refining defect workflows and ensuring high-quality bug ticket creation and maintenance.
- Ensure bug tickets accurately reflect defect states, including clear descriptions, classifications, impact assessments, and status updates.
- Track and follow up on high-priority and blocking defects, ensuring continued progress toward resolution and timely communication to stakeholders.
- Contribute to a rapid integration and deployment schedule by supporting consistent software stack releases to extended testing teams.
- Work closely within the triage team and collaborate cross-functionally with development, testing, safety, ML, and operations teams to maintain a fast and responsive feedback loop.
- Support first-level triage of Minimum Risk Maneuver (MRM) software issues by determining what happened, classifying the issue, and identifying immediate impact.
- Perform second-level, deeper investigations into issues to determine root causes, validate hypotheses through testing and analysis, and recommend corrective actions.
- Support trucks and test operations across multiple shifts, including daytime, late night, and weekend schedules, to understand issues emerging at different times and ensure consistent information flow.
- Respond as needed to issues encountered by drivers and automation teams on test trucks, including on-site support in the office and coordination with remote teams.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, systems engineering, or a related technical field.
- 3–5+ years of industry experience leading test programs with a focus on system triage, defect tracking, and impact analysis.
- Experience working with complex embedded systems, including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving software architectures.
- Hands-on experience with sensors, networking, compute hardware, and control systems in automotive or similar safety-critical domains.
- Experience with software development tools such as build systems, containers, and source control systems.
- Experience working with software for real-time or safety-critical systems.
- Experience with machine-learned software components, including understanding of how ML models integrate into larger systems.
- Experience with ADAS or autonomous technologies, including autonomous driving, sensor fusion, and perception systems (e.g., lidar and related sensor technologies).
- Familiarity with triaging issues using logs and tools such as ROS logs in robotics or autonomous systems.
- Experience using defect tracking and project management tools such as Jira for bug tracking and workflow management.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and identify root causes.
- High attention to detail and the ability to learn and adapt in unstructured and evolving environments.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with rapidly evolving software and hardware infrastructure.
- Experience with public road forensic analysis of robotic or autonomous system disengagements.
- Experience collaborating across functions to improve system triage and forensics processes in large-scale, safety-critical systems.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience testing autonomous vehicles, ROS-based robotic systems, or ADAS features.
- Experience with configuration management of safety-critical systems.
- Understanding of systems engineering and verification and validation methodologies.
- Experience designing and commissioning custom Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test fixtures.
- Experience working with autonomous, automotive, or heavy truck platforms.
- Familiarity with reinforcement learning and training workflows for machine learning models.
- Experience working with 3D visualization tools for sensor and log analysis.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly document issues, present findings, and collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Interest in working on emerging AI and automation technologies and contributing to the training and improvement of AI models.
Work Environment
This role operates in a hybrid environment, with work primarily based in an office located in the Fort Worth area and periodic on-site presence required a couple of days per week or as needed. The engineer must be accessible to support issues encountered by drivers and automation teams on test trucks, including being called in to assist with live operational challenges. The position supports a test schedule where trucks operate during the day, late at night, and on weekends, so shift work is required to understand and triage issues occurring at different times of the day. Typical shifts include a second shift from approximately 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and a night shift from approximately 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., and the role may involve overnight work. The environment centers on advanced AI, autonomous driving, and embedded systems technologies, offering the opportunity to work on up-and-coming AI solutions and contribute directly to training and improving AI models. Work involves close collaboration with cross-functional engineering, safety, ML, and operations teams, as well as frequent interaction with sensor data, ROS logs, and 3D visualization tools. The setting combines office-based analysis and collaboration with occasional direct support of vehicle operations, emphasizing a fast-paced, innovative culture focused on safety, reliability, and continuous improvement.
