Job Title: Sound Engineer

Department: Wexner Center for Arts | Tech Operations

The Sound Engineer serves as a key member of the Production team, supporting both the technical execution and artistic realization of live events while ensuring the operational readiness of the Center's audio and audiovisual systems. This position plays an essential role in delivering exceptional experiences for artists, audiences, and stakeholders across a variety of performance, exhibition, and event settings.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the lead Sound Engineer for performances, events, and programs presented by the Wexner Center for the Arts and external stakeholders across multiple venues and spaces.
• Prepare, operate, and provide technical support for audio, video, and related production equipment for rehearsals, performances, exhibitions, and special events.
• Design, install, configure, operate, troubleshoot, maintain, and strike professional sound and audiovisual systems for theaters, galleries, and other event spaces.
• Read, interpret, and implement technical riders, stage plots, production schedules, and other event-related documentation.
• Collaborate closely with artists, designers, visiting production teams, and Center staff to support artistic and production goals while ensuring high-quality audience experiences.
• Support the design and implementation of audiovisual systems for gallery installations, exhibitions, and non-traditional performance environments.
• Assist visiting designers and production personnel during rehearsals, performances, and event load-ins/load-outs.
• Create and manage professional multi-channel audio recordings as needed.
• Maintain accurate inventory records, equipment documentation, and related technical paperwork.
• Service, maintain, and ensure operational readiness of the Center's professional audio, video, and mobile production equipment inventory.
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe workspaces across all production, performance, and technical areas.
• Partner with colleagues across production and technical disciplines to support departmental initiatives, shared projects, and event operations beyond primary audio responsibilities.
• Attend production meetings, planning sessions, and institutional meetings as required.
• Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, adaptability, and a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach while managing projects through successful completion.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

• This is an in-person position requiring on-site support for rehearsals, performances, installations, events, and related preparation activities.
• Regular evening and weekend work is required based on event and performance schedules.
• Work routinely involves operating at heights, including the use of ladders, lifts, and catwalks, as well as handling and transporting technical equipment in active production environments.
• Successful completion of a background check is required prior to the start date.

Supervises

• Intermittent event staff- Stagehands

Minimum Education Required

• Bachelor's Level Degree in Engineering or other related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications Required

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or other related field or equivalent combination of education and experience; minimum of 4 years of experience required;
• Experience in theatre technology; experience in audio, video, film and lighting fields, preferably in visual and performing arts; experience with digital and analog audio mixing consoles, lighting control systems, wired and wireless handheld and lavalier microphones, hearing-impaired assistance sets
• Work independently; ability to collaborate with colleagues from a variety of functional areas; positive workplace attitude; ability to troubleshoot; proficiency in MS Office suite; must be able to work independently and as part of a team under general supervision; must be self-motivated with the ability to manage
• Multiple projects simultaneously with limited supervision; excellent interpersonal, organization and communication skills; work effectively with culturally diverse customers and client groups; focus, flexibility, and great attention to detail.

Desired

• Knowledge of or experience in professional recording and editing; experience in design, construction, and repair of electronic, electrical, and mechanical equipment;
• member of professional organizations in this field (USITT, ESTA, ETCP); willing to pursue certifications and other educational opportunities int he field
