Job Description

The Transmission Line Engineer role sits within the transmission department and focuses on delivering high-quality engineering solutions for utility transmission projects. You will collaborate closely with senior engineers, in-house teams, and client engineers and designers to complete projects from concept through construction. This position offers the opportunity to design transmission facilities across a wide range of voltages, contribute to critical infrastructure, and grow through mentoring and leadership responsibilities while working under the guidance of more senior engineers.

Responsibilities

• Perform engineering and design activities related to transmission line projects, including engineering analysis, route selection, material acquisition, structural design, foundation design, and project and construction management.

• Prepare comprehensive project construction documents such as plan and profile drawings, detailed design drawings, engineering specifications, material and construction specifications, project schedules, and bills of material.

• Develop and evaluate project design alternatives and prepare corresponding cost estimates to support decision-making and project planning.

• Design new transmission facilities with voltages ranging from 12 kV to 765 kV, ensuring compliance with technical standards and regulatory requirements.

• Utilize PLS-CADD to model transmission line designs and optimize line configurations and structures.

• Lead and participate in contractor bid and construction meetings, helping to ensure that work activities are performed safely, follow project plans and established schedules, and comply with internal policies, rules, standards, and external regulations.

• Coordinate effectively with governmental and regulatory agencies and contractors to obtain necessary project permits and approvals.

• Provide leadership to facilitate successful project completion, including training and mentoring other engineers and contributing to the development of measurable work area goals and objectives.

• Function as a project lead for transmission projects, overseeing technical activities, coordinating resources, and managing project deliverables.

• Coordinate the work activities of others within the work group and department to ensure transmission projects are completed on time and within scope.

• Provide training, guidance, and technical support to lower-level employees to enhance team capabilities and project quality.

• Initiate corrective actions when substation project objectives or transmission project goals are not being met, and help drive projects back on track.

• Work under the supervision of higher-level engineers while progressively assuming greater responsibility and independence.

• Conduct occasional site visits to review field conditions, support construction activities, and verify that designs are implemented as intended.

Essential Skills

• Two to five years of experience working in utilities with a focus on Transmission Line Design.

• Two to five years of experience completing engineering projects from start to finish, including design, documentation, and implementation.

• Two to five years of experience scoping, estimating, and ordering materials for transmission line projects.

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering; an ABET-accredited degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering may count toward years of experience.

• Proficiency in transmission line design principles and practices.

• Hands-on experience using PLS-CADD for transmission line modeling and design.

• Strong design engineering skills with a focus on high-voltage transmission systems.

• Solid understanding of civil engineering concepts as they apply to transmission structures and foundations.

• Ability to prepare detailed engineering drawings and documentation, including plan and profile drawings and design specifications.

• Experience with AutoCAD for creating and modifying engineering drawings.

• Ability to coordinate with internal teams, external stakeholders, and regulatory agencies to support project execution.

• Capability to lead portions of projects and provide guidance to less experienced team members while working under engineer supervision.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• EIT (Engineer-in-Training) license is desirable but not required.

• Experience working on high-voltage transmission projects and familiarity with voltages ranging from 12 kV to 765 kV.

• Knowledge of material acquisition processes and construction management practices for transmission line projects.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with in-house engineers, client engineers, designers, contractors, and regulatory agencies.

• Demonstrated ability to participate in and lead contractor bid and construction meetings.

• Ability to mentor and train other engineers and lower-level employees, contributing to team development.

• Experience developing project schedules, bills of material, and cost estimates.

• Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and coordinate work activities across a project team.

• Commitment to safety and adherence to internal policies, standards, and external regulations.

Work Environment

Teamwork is highly encouraged and occurs frequently, with engineers and designers working together to solve complex transmission challenges and deliver high-quality projects. Occasional site visits are required to observe field conditions and support construction, providing a balance between remote design work and on-site project engagement.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Birmingham, AL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $55.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
