Staff Accountant (Washington DC-Baltimore Area)

About the Opportunity

Our client, a well-established nonprofit/professional membership organization headquartered in Washington, DC, is seeking a Staff Accountant to join its accounting and finance team. This position offers the opportunity to support core accounting operations, financial reporting, month-end close activities, and annual audit preparation in a mission-driven environment.

Responsibilities

• Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions accurately and timely.
• Reconcile AP and AR subledgers and resolve discrepancies.
• Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations, including prepaid and accrual accounts.
• Create and post journal entries to maintain accurate financial records.
• Assist with month-end close activities, including accrual calculations and account analysis.
• Maintain fixed asset schedules and record depreciation and amortization entries.
• Support annual audits by preparing schedules and gathering supporting documentation.
• Upload and maintain departmental budgets and assist with budget variance analysis.
• Ensure accurate 1099 reporting and year-end tax form preparation.
• Assist with sales and use tax compliance, where applicable.
• Respond to internal accounting inquiries and provide guidance on financial processes and procedures.
• Support special projects and ad hoc financial reporting requests.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience, including experience within a nonprofit organization.
• Strong understanding of accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and general ledger accounting.
• Experience assisting with month-end close and audit preparation.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including advanced spreadsheet functions and analysis.
• Experience with NetSuite is highly preferred; experience with accounting systems and reporting tools is required.
• Knowledge of sales and use tax filings is a plus.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a collaborative environment.

Preferred Background

• Nonprofit accounting experience.
• NetSuite ERP experience.
• Experience handling 1099 reporting and fixed asset accounting.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining GAAP compliance.
