The Director of Board Affairs will be part of the SFUSD Communications and Governance team and serve as a dedicated staff member to the San Francisco Board of Education. The position will provide strategic and planning support to the Board of Education to implement student outcomes-focused governance, including leading inclusive community engagement efforts, enacting high-quality and consistent Board operations, and developing and improving effective systems to ensure strategic alignment across the governance team. The Director of Board Affairs reports to the SFUSD Head of Communications and Governance. As the Director of Board Affairs, you will:
- Facilitate strategic alignment among Board of Education, Superintendent, and SFUSD staff to promote student outcomes focused governance.
- Leverage K-12 professional networks to develop and implement learning opportunities for Board of Education members and District staff to align SFUSD governance with industry best practices.
- Serve as a liaison among SFUSD Superintendent, her leadership team, and Board of Education to strengthen decision-making and collaboration.
- Build and implement strong systems to ensure effective communication, board operations, and administration of the Board of Education Office.
- Staff and operationalize the Board of Education public meetings.
- Cultivate cross-functional collaboration districtwide to ensure timely, accurate, and relevant information sharing
- Manage Board Office budget, personnel, and operations.
- Lead and facilitate internal working groups to deliver outcomes on District and Board policy, continuous improvement, inclusive decision-making and change management initiatives.
- Manage Board office staff to ensure smooth operations with quality assurance and quality control.
- Lead Board of Education community engagement efforts with external stakeholders.
- Manage SFUSD participation in K-12 affiliate organizations.
- Lead with compassion, humility, and adaptiveness, and be open to continuous learning and improvements as part of professional development and growth.
- Experience with K-12 governance practices
- Experience facilitating groups of people with diverse backgrounds, experience, and points of view
- Experience working in a large complex government agency, ideally in the public education sector
- Ability to maintain highly organized methods of operating within a complex system
- Comfort with multimedia and graphic design tools, including Adobe, Google Suite
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and/or Cantonese
- Knowledge of urban public school landscapes including policies, politics, education practices and funding
- Awareness and experience in the use of multi-channel community engagement marketing.
- Ability to engage, inspire, and influence people
- Demonstrated record of creating, managing, and implementing comprehensive communications plans
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey information to a variety of audiences
- Experience with public policy, legislative processes, and governance.
- Ability to quickly master new technology and systems
- Strong analytical and systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategies
- Ability to coordinate and manage complex cross-functional projects with multiple competing priorities or perspectives
- A proven record of effectively planning, organizing, and using resources to take action and achieve goals
- Ability to manage ambiguity, risk, and changing direction of projects and strategies
- Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and management skills and high professional standards for work quality
- Success leading effective teams and highly motivated individuals toward outcomes-driven success
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations that require sound decision-making.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends
- Bachelor's degree (B.A. / B.S) from an accredited college or university; advanced degree preferred
- Four (4) years of full-time verifiable professional experience in legislative, government, or public affairs, including serving as a strategic advisor to elected bodies, administration of fast-paced public meetings and information systems, development of budget and legislative analysis on complex K-12 issues, and proven track record to engage diverse audiences on complex legislative and policy issues in large urban educational settings.
