The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is a federal law enforcement agency within the U.S. Department of Justice responsible for the custody, care, and rehabilitation of individuals convicted of federal crimes. It was created in 1930 to centralize and professionalize the care and custody of federal inmates.

Responsibilities include:

• Serves as an Advanced Practice Nurse in a Federal Bureau of Prisons correctional facility and is responsible for providing primary health care for federal inmates.
• Primary health care will include comprehensive assessment and management of uncomplicated acute and stable chronic health problems.
• Emphasis will be placed on patient education, patient counseling, continuity of care, health promotion and maintenance, disease prevention and management.
• Patient management decisions will be made in collaboration with physicians and established clinical guidelines.
• Manages the daily operation of the outpatient/inpatient departments and conducts daily sick call.
• Performs comprehensive physical and psycho social assessment including health maintenance screening and risk evaluation.

Qualifications include:

• You must hold a current, unrestricted RN license in a U.S. state or territory.
• You must be nationally certified as a Nurse Practitioner (such as Family, Adult-Gerontology, or Psychiatric-Mental Health NP) through an approved certifying body (e.g., ANCC or AANP).
• A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited program is required.
• Prior experience as an RN and/or Nurse Practitioner is typically required, often in primary care, emergency medicine, urgent care, or correctional/acute care settings.
• Must pass a federal background investigation, drug screening, and complete credentialing requirements, which may include maintaining DEA registration if prescribing controlled substances.
