Assistant Professor, University Medical Line, Dept of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Position Overview

There has been significant growth in thoracic aortic surgery and transcatheter aortic and valvular therapies at the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Health Care System. The Stanford faculty in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University will recruit a cardiothoracic surgeon with expertise in these areas to join the University Medical Line at the Palo Alto VA. The individual will be part of a robust program in thoracic aortic surgery, valvular surgery, and other subspecialty areas in adult cardiovascular surgery. Occasional clinical coverage responsibilities will be at the Stanford main campus and other Stanford-affiliated sites.

Responsibilities

• Develop and lead an integrated research program related to thoracic aortic diseases, conducting basic science, translational, and engineering research to develop independently funded laboratories.
• Conduct an active clinical practice in thoracic aortic and valvular surgery.
• Teach and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and other trainees.
• Participate in surgical resident and medical student education.
• Assist in occasional clinical coverage at the Stanford main campus and affiliated sites.

Qualifications

• Board‑eligible or board‑certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery, and residency‑trained in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
• Completed house‑staff training and, where appropriate, postdoctoral fellowship training.
• Demonstrated excellence or promise of excellence in clinical care, teaching, and scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine.
• Evidence or promise of attaining regional recognition for excellence in the mix of contributions.
• Commitment to teaching and potential to meet or exceed acceptable standards in teaching.
• Legal and policy compliance with EEO and affirmative action requirements.

Compensation and Benefits

Assistant Professor: $300,000 – $365,000 (base pay). This range reflects base pay based on rank and years in rank and does not include all components of the faculty compensation program or participation in departmental incentive compensation programs. The selected candidate’s pay will be determined by experience, qualifications, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
