The Southern University at New Orleans Police Department (SUNOPD) is an internationally accredited law enforcement agency. Our goal is that with the help of the students, parents, faculty, staff, and community, we can create a productive and safe environment for everyone to learn and grow. SUNOPD's philosophy of community policing embodies the importance of cooperation, education, and police-community member partnerships. SUNOPD serves and protects our campus community as a full-service law enforcement agency staffed by professional, highly trained, commissioned police officers 24-hours a day. The Police Sergeant supervises Police Officers and other department employees in enforcement of local, state, and federal laws and in provision of personal, real property, and equipment security throughout campus. Supervises investigation and documentation of crimes and incidents. Documents and presents evidence; provides legal testimony. Work involves an element of personal danger. Minimum Qualifications Three years of law enforcement experience. EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION: Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience. The maximum substitution allowed is 60 semester hours which substitutes for two years of experience. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license. Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required. An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted. Job Duties and Other Information Job Duties Supervises police officers in performance of regularly assigned patrols and incident investigations; prepares shift notices and assignments; conducts pre-hire evaluations of prospective police officer candidates; conducts performance evaluations; makes recommendations in matters concerning employee discipline and retention. Reviews police documentation including incident and accident reports and daily logs for accuracy and compliance with criminal, motor vehicle, and traffic laws and with university regulations. Assists commanders in establishing procedures; makes recommendations regarding improvements or changes in department operations. Pursuing and apprehending fleeing suspects (climbing fences or walls, jumping ditches, running up to several blocks, etc.) Conducts accident and crime investigations and prepares detailed reports, including State Motor Vehicle Accident Reports and State Uniform Incident Reports.
