Registered Nurse Labor and Delivery

Job Summary:


The Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery is responsible for providing specialized nursing care in a high-acuity obstetric setting including OB triage, labor and delivery, antepartum, and postpartum care. The role involves patient assessments, monitoring, medication administration, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to manage high-risk pregnancies and deliveries. The nurse must maintain certifications in BLS, ACLS, AWHONN Intermediate and Advanced, and NRP, with a minimum of 2 years of experience. Strong communication, clinical judgment, and charge nurse capabilities are essential.

Responsibilities:

• Provide skilled nursing care to patients in OB triage, labor and delivery, antepartum, and postpartum units.
• Perform patient assessments, monitor fetal and maternal status, and manage labor progress.
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed and document care accurately.
• Collaborate with physicians, midwives, and interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement care plans.
• Manage high-risk labor and deliveries, including induction and emergency situations.
• Serve as charge nurse or assist with charge nurse duties as required or trained.
• Utilize Epic electronic medical records for documentation and communication.
• Maintain a safe and supportive environment for patients and families.
• May float within scope to similar units as needed to meet facility demands.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Alaska Registered Nurse license (must complete application within 48 hours of signing and have license in hand for auto offer).
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification.
• AWHONN Intermediate and Advanced certifications.
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
• Minimum of 2 years nursing experience, preferably in Labor and Delivery or related OB specialties.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high acuity environment.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Previous charge nurse experience or willingness to train as charge nurse.
• Experience with Epic electronic health record system.
• Experience in Magnet designated and Level II Trauma hospital settings.

Special Considerations:

• Must be able to complete Alaska RN license application within 48 hours of signing contract.
• No on-call requirements.
• Weekend work required every other weekend.
• May be required to float to like units within scope.
• Time off requests approved individually and must be submitted with application.
• Pending licenses accepted but license must be in hand for auto offer.
• Local candidates not accepted; permanent address must be at least 50 miles from facility.

Scheduling:

• 13-week assignment with a schedule of three 12-hour night shifts per week, most likely a straight night shift position.
• If needed, schedule may flip every 4 weeks between nights and days.
• Guaranteed 60 hours per 2 weeks, with possibility of being called off for one 12-hour shift per pay period.
• Block scheduling accommodations are not available.
