The Community Services Department for the County of Santa Barbara is seeking one (1) full-time Park Maintenance Worker located in Santa Barbara, California (Cachuma Lake) . Under general supervision, Park Maintenance Workers perform a variety of construction and maintenance/repair work associated with County parks, beaches, and leisure recreational facilities; performs related duties as assigned. May be required to lift and carry heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

The IDEAL CANDIDATE will possess:

• Trade experience (such as electrician, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, etc.)

• A Class A License.
• Proficient with computers and computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.

• Certified Pool/Spa Operator (CPO) Certificate

Examples of Duties

• Builds, installs, maintains, and repairs chain link fences, wooden fences, backstops, playground equipment, barbecues, picnic tables, roofs, windows, doors, floors, and stone walls by using construction hand and power tools, sledge hammers, wire cutters, etc.; constructs and maintains hazardous waste containment facilities.
• Excavates, grades, and prepares ground surfaces for concrete and decomposed granite applications; fabricates concrete structures such as foundations, footings, and slabs by building forms, cutting and tying rebar, mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete work; patches or repairs damaged areas or holes with premix.
• Installs and maintains water lines and associated facilities such as drinking fountains and irrigation and sprinkler systems; maintains sewer lift stations.
• Maintains public swimming pools according to applicable County and State codes; monitors and adjusts swimming pool chemicals and filter equipment; oversees and directs seasonal employees in all pool maintenance duties.
• Installs, inspects, maintains, and repairs electrical lines, and interior and exterior lighting.
• Repairs, sands, scrapes, paints, or stains tables, benches, fences, signs, doors, windows, and small structures.
• Mows, aerates, trims, and edges turf areas; rakes, sweeps and vacuums leaves, trimmings, and clippings; weeds, cultivates, plants, fertilizes, irrigates, and sprays planted areas; prunes and trims trees, shrubs, and hedges and feeds debris into a chipper; rakes sand, removes debris, and buries dead fish and animals on County-owned beaches.
• May maintains sports fields and performs annual preventative maintenance on sports fields
• Performs arc, gas, and shielded arc welding in the fabrication of metal fixtures and structures.
• Operates, services, and makes minor repairs to grounds maintenance equipment, including sharpening and maintaining hand and power tools, mowers, tractors and small equipment; performs scheduled maintenance for trailers, light to heavy diesel and gasoline tractors and trucks; transports, loads, and un-loads supplies, tools, equipment, and vehicles.
• Purchases tools and supplies; provides written estimates for projects that include amount and kinds of materials, projected costs, and completion time.

Employment Standards

• Two years of broad experience in construction and general maintenance; OR ,
• A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Class C Drivers License.

Additional Requirements for Assignments at Lake Cachuma and Cuyama : Possession of a valid Certified Pool/Spa Operator (CPO) certificate is required. Candidates may be appointed before receiving the CPO certificate. As a condition of continued employment, however, appointees must obtain the required certificate within twelve months of their appointment.

Knowledge of: general principles of construction, plumbing, electrical, masonry, and painting work; operation and maintenance of common types of light to heavy equipment used in construction and landscaping.

Skill to: fabricate and weld metal; use and manipulate small hand tools such as screwdrivers and hammers as well as larger tools such as shovels, trowels, rakes; construct, maintain, and repair various types of structures used in park access and use.

Ability to: read, understand, and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and manuals; follow safety practices in use and storage of various herbicides and pesticides; establish and maintain working relationships with others; keep records and prepare reports sufficient to document inspections, pesticide usage, etc.; keep inventory of supplies and materials; make arithmetical computations.

Supplemental Information

The incumbent may be required to obtain a class A license within 12 months of employment. Once an incumbent has obtained the Class A license, he/she will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs prior to being assigned work requiring such a license; once assigned, incumbents will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis.

Incumbents in these classifications may be exposed to a variety of hazardous and/or unpleasant working conditions, including: wet, rainy, cold, or hot weather; poison oak; and exposure to chemicals.

Work in this classification is characterized by demanding physical labor, such as: lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; continuous walking, occasionally on rough or uneven terrain; climbing into and out of vehicles at various heights above ground; maintaining body balance in awkward positions.

• Review Applications and supplemental questionnaire to determine applications that meet the employment standards.
• Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking: Responses to the supplemental questionnaire on the application, will be evaluated and scored. Candidates final score and rank on the employment list will be determined by the supplemental questionnaire ranking. This process may be eliminated if there are fewer than 11 qualified candidates.

Candidates must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates will receive written notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list, and exact duration of the employment list.
