Research Analyst – US Sports Media Location: New York, New York, United States About the Role The US Sports Media analyst will spend about 50% of their time updating and creating financial models for a variety of sports media properties, including emerging local broadcast TV stations and direct‑to‑consumer streaming services. They will assist with estimates for sports‑centric cable networks such as ESPN, produce 5‑year projections, and present findings to clients, the press, and internal stakeholders. Responsibilities Update financial models annually and adjust for major developments (new rights deals, carriage changes). Leverage Media Census video subscriber data to estimate inner and outer market subscribers on a Nielsen DMA level. Estimate inner and outer market license fees to calculate total affiliate revenue. Use CPM, advertising inventory, and ratings estimates to calculate advertising revenue. Allocate sports rights expenses using an amortization schedule across the contract period. Balance estimated totals against reported 10K data where applicable. Produce 5‑year projections based on macroeconomic and industry trends. Reach out to industry contacts for input on models. Maintain a database tracking media rights deals for all 83 U.S.‑based MLB, NBA, and NHL teams, including cost, contract length, and annual average price. Maintain a database tracking national sports rights deals across broadcast and cable networks (e.g., World Cup, Olympics, NFL Sunday Ticket, Super Bowl advertising rates). Maintain a database tracking RSN carriage across major traditional and virtual MVPDs. Write a series of articles around these databases and track quarterly earnings releases for major RSN owners like Diamond Sports Group. Research developments related to the rise of legalized sports gambling and the shift of media rights to streaming services. Attend industry conferences such as the CAA World Congress of Sports, network with industry executives, and produce conference panel discussion articles. Contribute to consulting jobs related to the sports media industry. Qualifications Knowledge and interest in U.S. Sports and media sectors. Experience working with major professional sports leagues or individual teams. Background in distribution strategy, media rights, or advertising sales. Analytical skills, including high‑level Excel, financial modeling, and coding experience (Python, SQL, Tableau, Power BI). Experienced researcher with professional writing skills and a publishing background. Ability to interact with clients, prospects, and participate in external speaking engagements. Team player with good communication and collaboration skills. Compensation & Benefits Base salary range: $61,846 – $126,225 (commensurate with experience, skill set, and location). Eligible for an annual incentive plan.
