Principal Technical Recruiter (United States)

Murphy Talent Group is growing and looking for an experienced technical recruiter to join our small and growing team in a remote setting. The founder of Murphy Talent is Derrick Murphy who spent years at Google and Meta then was Head of Talent and VP of People at an Synthetic Data start-up called Gretel that was acquired by NVIDIA in 2025 for 320 million.

What makes us different?

We work closely with a few Bay Area and NYC based start-ups, a couple of prominent VCs and have deep industry connections to top companies. We have built game-changing proprietary sourcing systems that help us identify and match candidates to our clients roles in just a few minutes based on real signals, not just key words, and we have an AI Engineer full time on staff working to further improve these systems. We focus on building trusted relationships with our clients rather than being a cog in a machine.

Currently a well known Series B start-up is trusting us to build the talent of their new AI lab from scratch in San Francisco.

We're looking for someone who has proven success as a technical recruiter (top producer?!) working on roles like Research Scientist, Research Engineer, Software Engineers (front-end, backend, full stack), ML Engineering, Data Science, and related. If you've worked on these roles but just know them by key words and on the surface level, it won't be a good fit.

We run mostly contingent searches for top Seed stage through Series C start-ups, and may expand into retained search.

This is a commission based role (1099), where you'd earn 40% of every placement you make. 20% goes to our AI Engineer and 40% to the agency. Estimated annual earnings are 200k and above with no cap, but it depends highly on performance. This role is not for other agencies to partner with us - so please don't reach out. A sign-on bonus after 30 days is possible.

For example purposes, our two most recent placements were 50k USD each, so for similar placements, you'd earn 20k each. Placements fees will vary depending on role and client.

About you

• You're a seasoned recruiter who takes time to deeply understand the roles you're working on and you're a great communicator.
• You really care about the candidate experience and relationship building aspect of recruitment.
• You know the highs and lows of recruiting and don't take the emotional rollercoaster of ups and downs.
• You're a good person who genuinely cares about your candidates and the outcomes for your hiring teams, not just earning a commission.
• You don't use AI for everything, you know that the human touch matters in this business.
• Expertise in one or more of the following areas: Software Engineering, Machine Learning/Applied Science/Research.
• 5+ years of experience, but less would be considered for candidates who have had exceptional impact in previous roles, even early career.

Nice to Haves:

• Have been in a Founding Recruiter or Head of Talent type of role.
• Have experience driving new business.
• Experience with Ashby, Greenhouse, or Lever.
