Position Summary Reporting to the Rehabilitation Therapies Supervisor/Manager, the Outpatient Physical Therapist conducts comprehensive assessment of outpatient clients with physical and functional deficits, planning and implementing individual/group physical therapy treatments to promote mobility, reduce pain, restore function, prevent permanent disability and promote independence, using various treatment techniques. The role collaborates with other disciplines to arrange appropriate follow‑up care and facilitates a successful return to home and work environments. Provides student training according to departmental guidelines and participates in continuous education. Location: 39B District Avenue, Dorchester, MA. Job Responsibilities Conduct physical therapy evaluation procedures according to professional and departmental guidelines. Respond to all consults in assigned area within 24 hours; complete evaluation and documentation within 24 hours of consult (IP). Review patient records, gather necessary information, and obtain a physician’s order prior to assessing the patient. Select evaluation procedures that reflect understanding of the patient’s diagnosis, abilities, and limitations. Administer evaluation procedures according to guidelines of standardized tests (including range of motion, manual muscle testing, mobility, air entry and breadth sounds); adapt evaluation procedures as indicated to accommodate specific needs of patients. Interpret evaluation results, develop an integrated diagnostic impression, and make recommendations. Perform re‑evaluations according to departmental policies, changes in patient’s status, or response to treatment. Educate patient and caregiver regarding evaluation findings and management of care recommendations. Establishes Treatment Goals and Plans Formulate goals and plans that reflect the patient’s unique psychosocial and functional deficits. Establish measurable and attainable short‑ and long‑term goals in collaboration with patient and/or caregiver. Modify goals as warranted by changes in patient’s status. Assess discharge needs of the patient and caregiver, including insurance issues, equipment needs, follow‑up appointments, and community services. Communicate patient care and discharge needs to team members; arrange appropriate follow‑up. Implements Comprehensive Individual and Group Treatment Establish treatment priorities based on evaluation results and specific needs of patients. Use creative treatment approaches and explore alternative solutions to individual patient problems. Demonstrate clinical problem‑solution skills with a variety of patient problems and substantiate actions taken. Progress patient treatment programs appropriately and terminate them as warranted by patient’s progress and condition. Recommend and issue appropriate assistive devices or durable medical equipment, ensuring proper fit. Develop and instruct patient and caregiver in home programs and/or use of recommended equipment; provide verbal and written instructions as indicated. Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with all patients. Engage patients in treatment, provide reinforcement and support, set limits appropriately, and demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills for age groups served. Notify supervisor when patients outside regularly served age groups are present; seek assistance from specialists. Adhere to diagnosis‑related precautions; exercise good judgment and seek assistance when needed. Assign appropriate patients to Physical Therapist Assistant and Rehabilitation and/or Co‑op Aide; seek feedback. Monitor clinical supplies and request replacements in a timely manner. Compliance with Policies and Standards Complete area‑specific documentation accurately and timely, achieving 95% or greater on each indicator. Issue supplies/adaptive equipment cost‑effectively; justify issuance, demonstrate use, and seek alternatives. Complete patient care charges accurately; meet area‑specific productivity standards at least 95% of the time. Identify problems and adjust to meet productivity targets; participate in peer review and provide constructive feedback. Complete mandatory requirements (PPD, competencies, safety/infection control tests, CPR, license renewal) within timeframe. Professional Growth and Knowledge Initiate independent learning opportunities and integrate new information into daily practice; communicate learning needs to supervisor. Stay current with advances in treatments and techniques through professional meetings, continuing education, and literature. Demonstrate knowledge of federal and state regulations governing practice; assume responsibility and accountability for care of patients treated by assistants. Directly supervise rehabilitation and/or co‑op aide in accordance with State Practice Act. Participation in Program Development Identify floor needs and communicate with senior therapists and supervisors; contribute to unit files and resource materials. Assist in developing and achieving area goals. Collect data for research projects, clinical outcome studies, and quality improvement projects. Contribute to assessment, planning, and implementation of physical therapy programs with supervisors and peers. Collaboration with Colleagues Serve as clinical resource for other health care professionals; work as part of the rehabilitation therapy team. Accommodate change, remain adaptable and flexible, maintain professional demeanor during stress, and assume leadership. Attend all mandatory department meetings; arrive prepared and on time; accept additional assignments as requested. Provide at least one evidence‑based in‑service annually; offer in‑services to other hospital personnel upon request. Prepare and present information from peer‑reviewed journals in a clear, organized, concise manner. Participate respectfully in supervisory process; follow suggestions; come prepared to supervisory meetings. Develop and meet annual goals with high quality of performance. Orientation and Student Supervision Participate in pre‑affiliation and other observational experiences; orient medical staff and students and community volunteers. Demonstrate leadership and flexibility by taking on students; assist with class‑related supervision as needed. Provide well‑rounded learning experiences; assess student learning needs and provide training in evaluation and treatment procedures. Facilitate clinical problem‑solving skills by asking probing questions; schedule weekly meetings and provide feedback. Keep student program coordinator informed of performance; conduct performance evaluations and submit forms timely. Job Requirements Education Bachelor’s, Master’s, or equivalent in Physical Therapy from an accredited institution. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required Current and unencumbered Physical Therapist License issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. APTA and APTA MA membership preferred. Current Certification from AHA or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Workers. Experience Physical therapists with related experience are encouraged to apply. Knowledge & Skills Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and health care team members. Analytical abilities to evaluate patient condition, capabilities, and progress to develop appropriate treatment programs. Compensation Range $37.50 - $54.33 per hour This range is an estimate based on minimum job qualifications; actual pay will consider education, experience, skills, certifications, and organizational factors.
