Senior Staff Engineer - Performance and Observability

Role Description

GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Staff Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms and applications. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Our Senior Staff Engineer works with our Distinguished Engineer and Staff Engineers to design, deploy, and maintain OpenStack-based environments. You will help lead the automation of cloud operations, support containerization initiatives, and help optimize our CI/CD pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Improve on monitoring, observability and performance of deployed systems
• Design, deploy, and manage OpenStack-based cloud environments
• Develop and maintain automation scripts and playbooks using Python, Ansible, and GitHub Workflows
• Implement and optimize CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and application delivery
• Support containerization initiatives (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues in cloud and automation workflows
• Collaborate with development, operations, and security teams
• Share best practices and improve processes within and across teams
• Participate in on-call and operational support as needed
• Mentor junior engineers

Qualifications

• Strong experience with monitoring, logging, alerting and observability in cloud environments
• Deep familiarity with tools like Grafana and Prometheus
• Experience with performance tuning
• Proficiency in Python programming and scripting
• Experience with OpenStack administration and operations preferred
• Strong experience with Ansible for automation and configuration management
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools and workflows (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions, ArgoCD)
• Good understanding of networking and security best practices in cloud deployments
• Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
• Experience with infrastructure as code and deployment automation
• Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Strong communication and collaboration abilities

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional experience in cloud engineering, platform administration, or infrastructure automation
• 8+ years of experience with OpenStack or similar cloud platforms
• 8+ years of experience with Python and Ansible
• 8+ years of experience with CI/CD systems and containerization technologies
• Experience with hybrid or multi-cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure, or on-premises) is a plus
• Experience with low level virtualization technologies (QEMU/libvirt) is a plus

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience
