Flatbush Cats is a Brooklyn-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to reduce overcrowded animal shelters in New York City and prevent more cats from ending up on the street in the first place. What began as a grassroots rescue effort has grown into a citywide organization addressing the root causes through affordable veterinary care, access to spay/neuter services, and community outreach. As an independent nonprofit—not backed by venture capital, private equity, or a corporate veterinary network—we make decisions based on our mission. We recruit team members who are passionate about expanding access to veterinary care and measure success by how many pets and families we can help, not production targets. At the heart of our work is Flatbush Veterinary Clinic , a high-volume nonprofit clinic serving low-income pet owners, rescue organizations, and Trap‑Neuter‑Return (TNR) volunteers throughout Brooklyn. Each year, the clinic performs more than 7,500 spay/neuter surgeries—a number that continues to grow—while providing affordable wellness and dental care to thousands of pets. By combining high-quality veterinary care with a commitment to accessibility, we’re helping keep pets with their families while creating a city where more people and pets can receive the support they need. What you’ll do: The Community Outreach Coordinator connects Flatbush Veterinary Clinic with residents, community-based organizations, and neighborhood leaders. This individual‑contributor role coordinates the pet food pantry, supports trusted referral networks and partnership agreements, and operates offsite outreach events. The primary goal is to expand awareness of affordable veterinary services, remove barriers to care, help pet owners schedule and complete clinic appointments, and ensure outreach activities are consistently documented and measured. Work Schedule: This is a full‑time position with a Monday through Friday workweek. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required for offsite events, with advance scheduling whenever possible. Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance with 100% employer‑paid premiums Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) fully funded to cover the plan deductible, with funding levels based on coverage tier (employee‑only, employee + spouse, or family) Flexible Spending Account (FSA) with optional employee enrollment $500 annual employer contribution to the FSA, provided regardless of enrollment, plus an additional employer match of up to $500 for employees who enroll 401(k) retirement plan with employer match: 100% match on the first 3% of contributions, plus 50% match on contributions up to 5% Transit and parking benefit: $60 monthly employer contribution, applicable to either transit or parking at the employee’s discretion Paid time off, paid sick time, and paid holidays Responsibilities: Key Responsibilities Coordinate the Pet Food Pantry: Support day‑to‑day pantry operations, including ordering, receiving, inventory and storage, eligibility and distribution processes, client communication, and accurate recordkeeping. Build community relationships: Develop trusted, culturally responsive relationships with Flatbush residents, community organizations, housing providers, schools, faith communities, businesses, and neighborhood leaders. Connect pet owners with care: Engage community members through outreach, explain available veterinary services and resources, identify barriers to care, and support appointment scheduling, follow‑through, and successful clinic visits. Support community partnerships and referrals: Maintain relationships with assigned partners, coordinate communication and referral pathways, track commitments and follow‑up, and connect community members with appropriate resources and services. Coordinate mobile clinics and community outreach: Support and execute mobile veterinary and vaccine clinics, spay/neuter booking events, food distributions, workshops, community fairs, NYCHA and tenant outreach, tabling, and other neighborhood‑based initiatives. Manage event and outreach logistics: Coordinate sites, supplies, transportation, volunteers, setup and breakdown, accessibility, appointment workflows, and post‑event follow‑up. Support outreach communications: Collaborate with clinic and communications teams to develop clear, accessible, and multilingual outreach materials, event messaging, and referral information. Track outreach activities and outcomes: Maintain accurate records related to pantry services, outreach, referrals, events, appointments, and follow‑up; gather community feedback and support program reporting and improvement. Represent Flatbush Cats in the community: Attend community meetings and partner events, share information about programs and services, gather feedback, and communicate community needs and opportunities to the team. Support team coordination, special projects, and other mission‑aligned responsibilities as assigned Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in community engagement, nonprofit management, public health, social work, communications, animal welfare, or a related field preferred. At least two years of experience in community outreach, nonprofit programs, public health, human or animal services, community engagement, or a related field; equivalent combinations of education, volunteer service, and relevant experience are welcome. Demonstrated ability to build trust and positive relationships with diverse communities, residents, organizations, and service providers. Experience supporting community events, field operations, mobile services, distributions, workshops, or other public‑facing programs, including hands‑on logistics and coordination. Experience with referrals, partner communication, client follow‑up, or community resource coordination. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a welcoming, professional approach to community engagement and customer service. Strong organization and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, coordinate logistics, and maintain accurate records and program documentation. Comfort using shared calendars, spreadsheets, databases, scheduling systems, CRM platforms, and other digital tools; ability to learn new systems quickly. Sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential client information and maintaining accurate, secure records. Ability to work independently in the field, take initiative, solve day‑to‑day problems, and collaborate effectively with staff, volunteers, community members, and external partners. Ability to travel throughout Brooklyn, lift and transport event materials as needed, and work occasional evenings or weekends. Knowledge of Flatbush and surrounding Brooklyn communities, resources, and service networks strongly preferred. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and ability to safely operate a company vehicle preferred. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to bend, kneel, and crouch as needed to perform job duties. Ability to sit, stand, walk, and remain active for extended periods of time.
