Essential Skills Classroom Nurse (LPN)

The Lafayette School Corporation (LSC) is seeking a compassionate, highly skilled, and student-centered Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to serve as an Essential Skills Classroom Nurse at Linnwood Early Learning Center. This position plays a critical role in supporting students with developmental, medical, and physical disabilities by providing direct nursing care and health-related support services within the educational environment.

The Essential Skills Classroom Nurse works closely with classroom staff, therapists, families, and nursing supervisors to ensure that students receive the medical care and support necessary to participate fully in their educational programs. Position Summary: The Essential Skills Classroom Nurse (LPN) provides direct and delegated nursing care to students with developmental and physical disabilities in accordance with the Indiana Nurse Practice Act, professional nursing standards, and Lafayette School Corporation policies. Working under the supervision of the Director of Health Services and a designated Registered Nurse, the Essential Skills Classroom Nurse supports students' health, safety, and well-being by performing prescribed medical procedures, administering medications, managing daily health needs, and assisting with activities of daily living within the classroom environment.

Essential Responsibilities: Provide direct nursing care to students with developmental, physical, and medical disabilities. Administer medications and perform health procedures according to physician orders, district policy, and established health care plans. Provide first aid and respond to student illness, injury, and medical emergencies. Assist with activities of daily living and personal care needs as required. Support students with chronic health conditions and complex medical needs. Monitor student health status and communicate concerns to appropriate staff and families.

Specialized Medical Procedures: Perform delegated nursing procedures under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Assist with tube feedings, catheterization, seizure management, medication administration, glucose monitoring, insulin administration, repositioning, trach care, and other prescribed procedures. Maintain accurate documentation of nursing procedures and student health needs. Follow established Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs) and Emergency Care Plans (ECPs). Support safe implementation of physician orders and nursing protocols.

Collaboration & Communication: Collaborate with teachers, therapists, administrators, and nursing staff to support student success. Communicate with parents and guardians regarding student health concerns in accordance with district procedures. Maintain ongoing communication with supervising nursing staff regarding student health needs and concerns. Assist classroom staff in understanding and supporting student health care needs.

Health Documentation & Compliance: Maintain accurate nursing records and documentation. Assist with updating student health records, procedure logs, nursing notes, and emergency documentation. Support implementation and monitoring of Individualized Health Care Plans and Emergency Care Plans. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, nursing standards, and district policies.

Professional Practice: Maintain current nursing licensure and required certifications. Participate in required training, professional development, and nursing meetings. Monitor classroom environments for health and safety concerns. Assist with the care of students throughout the building as assigned. Ride school transportation when necessary to support student health needs. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Health Services.

Qualifications: Required Graduate of an accredited Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program Current Indiana Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) License Current CPR and First Aid Certification Successful completion of all required background checks Strong communication, organizational, and collaboration skills Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism Ability to respond effectively in emergencies Preferred Experience in pediatric nursing Experience working with students with disabilities or complex medical needs Experience in a school, pediatric, rehabilitation, or community healthcare setting Experience with tube feedings, catheterization, seizure management, medication administration, and other specialized nursing procedures Knowledge of child development and special education environments
