IN-DOH-Microbiologist II Antimicrobial Resistance

Position Overview This position is part of the Indiana Department of Health Laboratory, Antimicrobial Resistance Lab Network. Purpose of Position / Summary Incumbent is responsible for coordinating and performing the full range of microbiological examinations and analyses including culture, biochemical tests, PCR, and WGS of clinical specimens for isolation and identification of bacteria and yeast such as E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii and Candida auris. Incumbent will also document all quality control and quality assurance activities according to CLIA regulations and may cross‑train in other laboratory areas (molecular, viral, serological) to support routine testing and provide backup capacity. Essential Duties / Responsibilities Conduct examinations of samples for molecular detection or isolation and identification of microorganisms. Strictly follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, testing, reporting, and record maintenance. Extract nucleic acids from specimens, isolates and samples via manual and automated methods. Utilize molecular techniques such as PCR, sequencing, MALDI‑TOF and WGS. Evaluate, interpret and validate laboratory results and report findings. Maintain laboratory record system of submitted samples and specimens and manage referrals. Conduct quality control checks on laboratory methods, materials and equipment in strict adherence to quality control policies. Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and order as needed. Assist in preparation of epidemiological or statistical reports from compiled data. Maintain competency in all trained areas. Perform all related work as required. Follow laboratory director’s authorization for high‑complexity tests as required. Ensure proficiency testing samples are processed the same way as patient specimens. Document quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed. Address test systems not within acceptable performance levels and take corrective action or notify supervisors. Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting and correct or report them. Document corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance specifications. Perform high‑complexity testing only under onsite supervision when qualified. Job Requirements / Qualifications Extensive knowledge of the principles, theories and practices of microbiology and related sub‑specialties. Specialized knowledge of current scientific methods and testing procedures, with ability to apply them when solving public health laboratory problems. Proficiency in a full range of standard technical equipment, complex scientific apparatus and automated analysis techniques. Extensive knowledge of laboratory safety practices and principles. Awareness of state and federal laws, rules, regulations and policies concerning CLIA. Certification as a technologist pursuant to CLIA. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, and ability to maintain productive working relationships. Participation in proficiency testing programs and recognition of quality assurance problems. Ability to compile, analyze, evaluate, and prepare laboratory reports. At least two years of high‑complexity laboratory experience as testing personnel, with experience providing oversight of daily performance of high‑complex testing. Bachelor’s degree in biological science (highly desired). Skills Extensive knowledge of microbiology principles and sub‑specialties (Required). Working Conditions The incumbent will perform tests on potentially dangerous specimens, requiring use of personal protective equipment and working in a laboratory environment with temperature variations. Safety standards are of primary importance, and the candidate must maintain clear thought and accurate performance under these conditions. Physical Effort Extra effort and concentration are necessary to perform routine laboratory manipulations while wearing personal protective equipment.
