Position Summary The position of the Autism Specialist is for the purpose of monitoring the program responsible for developing student’s academic, self-help, independent functioning, and learning skills through specialized research-based strategies for children with Autism. The role provides feedback to certified staff regarding positive behavior intervention guidelines and functional analysis procedures. The position requires knowledge of educational methodology for students with autism, characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorders, current research on methodologies, interventions, and treatment, behavior management strategies for students with atypical behaviors, and knowledge of various methods of data collection and data analysis. Key Responsibilities Program supervision and training of DES staff in intervention techniques. Design and implementation of instructional support programs for students on the autism spectrum; conduct data collection and evaluation of student behaviors. Organize the team to develop intervention techniques and evaluate ongoing progress of each student in the Autism program; provide crisis intervention as needed. Participate in planning and dissemination of research-based best practices for the autism spectrum. Liaise with other critical connectors to continually enhance and promote appropriate intervention programs, methods, and strategies for students. Provide any other duties assigned and required to perform the above services. Key Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, General Education with Special Education coursework, or related field. Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in an Autism setting; knowledge of special education state and federal guidelines required. Ability to support teachers who assess students using the Georgia Alternate Assessment required. Georgia Professional Certification at a minimum level of 4 in a Special Education content field. Valid GA driver’s license. Ability to make decisions and recommendations affecting activities of others. Strong communication skills – written, verbal, and presentation; self-motivated and able to manage multiple projects in a team capacity. Proficiency with technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the district. Physical requirements: light duty – primarily sitting at a desk; occasional standing, stooping; light lifting of 20 lbs or less.
