Juvenile Intervention Specialist

Job Description A formal invitation to the Law Enforcement Testing will be sent to qualifying applicants by e-mail once the application has been received in the Professional Standards Office. Performs responsible protective services work including enforcing laws, investigating criminal activity, serving civil papers, ensuring the safety of the public, testifying in court, maintaining records and files, preparing reports, and performing other duties as assigned. Must be available to work any shift of the day on any day of the week, including weekends and holidays. Responsibilities Enforce laws and investigate criminal activity Serve civil papers and criminal arrest warrants Ensure the safety of the public and respond to radio dispatches and calls and complaints Operate a patrol vehicle to observe for violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order Make arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints Subdue resisting suspects using weapons, maneuvers, and other approved self‑defense methods Enforce traffic laws and issue citations for traffic violations Fill out arrest records; take fingerprints and photographs; perform prisoner security functions; investigate traffic accidents Interview victims and witnesses; secure property and evidence Prepare detailed reports on activities and assignments Perform related tasks as required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities High school diploma or equivalent; possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license; knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear, comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously, firmly, and tactfully with the public; ability to analyze situations and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; possession of physical agility and endurance; skill in the use of firearms and the operation of a motor vehicle; possession of all qualifications as required by the Code of Virginia, the Department of Criminal Justice Services, and the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office. Must also be 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen. Preference will be given to applicants with (in order): DCJS Law Enforcement Basic Certification, related work experience, good knowledge of Stafford County’s geography, and advanced training or college course work in law enforcement. Education and Experience Candidate selected will be required to complete a seven‑step hiring process including written, oral, and medical examinations; polygraph and physical agility tests; psychological evaluation; and background investigation. Examination Schedule and Notification to Attend Written Test Everyone submitting an application will be required to participate in a written examination. The test will be graded on site and the candidate will be advised of their score. A score of seventy‑percent (70%) or above is required to advance in the process. The Sheriff may waive this portion of the selection process in the event of prior police experience or other factors as determined by the Sheriff. Applicants should be prepared to commit approximately 3 hours for this examination. Additional Requirements Valid picture identification and direct deposit of bi‑weekly paychecks into one or more financial institution(s) of the applicant’s choice are required. Proper identification must be shown at time of hire in order to complete the necessary paperwork for compliance with the Immigration Control and Reform Act of 1986. Applicants must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment, and must be United States citizens. A high school diploma, equivalency, or GED is required, as is a valid driver's license. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony (or serious criminal offense), and must hold a Basic Law Enforcement Certificate through Virginia DCJS or another state if applicable. No current or prior law enforcement service with another agency is required, but experience is a plus.
