Responsibilities include managing the catalog of elective experiences, reviewing and approving new elective proposals with the curriculum committee, and ensuring alignment with the College of Medicine learning objectives. The director establishes evaluation standards for on-campus and away electives, maintains documentation of student performance, and collaborates with course directors, clerkship directors, department chairs, and the Office of Student Affairs to advise students on elective selection that supports career goals and balanced clinical exposure. The clerkship director serves as a member of the Individualization Phase Subcommittees of the Curriculum Committee. Regular attendance at monthly clerkship directors’ meetings and participation in curriculum committees is essential. Competencies and Expectations Maintain board certification (or board eligibility, if appropriate) through the relevant specialty board. Understand school-wide educational goals for students as outlined in student handbooks. Clearly communicate curricular goals of the department and the College of Medicine to students and faculty. Demonstrate strong administrative skills, including scheduling for students and faculty. Ensure consistent curriculum and learner assessment across multiple clinical sites. Manage credible, fair student assessment and grading processes that meet legal and accreditation standards, in collaboration with the Offices of Medical Education (OME) and Student Affairs and Belonging (OSAB). Provide constructive feedback to students and faculty. Analyze multiple data sources to drive continuous educational quality improvement. Collaborate with educational leaders to improve the education program. Assist in remediation for students who do not pass the clerkship. Provide skilled career counseling with knowledge of residency programs. Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with students and faculty. Advise department leadership on educational policy and strategic planning with attention to resources and community needs. EXPECTED PRODUCTIVITY Administration Regular communication with department/curriculum support on schedules and rotation requirements. Supervision of key departmental faculty at each clinical site. Regular reports to departments on curricular issues, faculty contributions, patient load adequacy for each clerkship site, and student performance. Letters of recommendation for residency applications as requested. Regular attendance at required curriculum and department meetings (75% minimum). Participation in the annual Faculty College of Medicine education retreats. Annual meetings with each clinical site. Curriculum Annual revision of the discipline-specific core curriculum. Ensure students complete experience and procedure logs and report on patient load adequacy for clerkships/rotations. Periodic review of NBME subject examination scores to ensure content mastery. Assessment Timely reporting of grades with narrative comments on goals achieved, strengths, and areas for improvement. Appropriate communication regarding students with academic difficulty, including referral to Student Affairs and the student promotions committee when warranted. Expected time commitment The clerkship director’s position is a 50% FTE (five full half-days per week) position, with duties that include building the Clerkship Phase and Individualization Phase curriculum in addition to the requirements described above. Required qualifications Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree with board certification in a relevant specialty. Minimum of 5–7 years of clinical practice experience. Ability to guide students effectively with clinical and academic experience. Preferred qualifications Experience in academic medicine is ideal but not required; includes teaching medical students and/or residents (typically 3–5 years).
