Head of Product Design

Overview We are building a network that brings together public and private sector entities across millions of workflows – from customs and transaction processing to macro‑policy analysis and supply‑chain resilience. As Head of Design you will shape the product vision, create a consistent, agent‑first design system, and lead the organization that delivers design solutions for a complex, AI‑native environment. What You’ll Do Build an Agent‑First Design Organization Define the structure, output, metrics, and scaling strategy for a high‑leverage, AI‑enabled design team. Recruit, develop, and lead designers who prototype in code, collaborate with AI, and treat the design system as their primary product. Establish rituals, review forums, and quality standards that empower a small team to deliver across a multi‑product, multi‑persona network without becoming a bottleneck. Champion a culture of working prototypes, agent‑generated variants, and live demos over static decks. Make the Design System the Product Own the vision for Altana’s design system as an enablement layer for product managers, engineers, and AI agents. Define the system as a structured set of patterns, tokens, content rules, interaction grammars, and accessibility guarantees that are semantic, composable, and legible to AI. Build documentation, tooling, and an AI‑native authoring workflow that make the design system the fastest, highest‑quality path to ship. Measure the system by leverage: number of new experiences shipped with minimal designer involvement, speed of pattern propagation, and rework prevented. Evolve the in‑product experience from human‑only workflows to agent‑native workflows, designing surfaces for reasoning, provenance, confidence, and uncertainty. Design Across a Multi‑Product, Multi‑Persona Network Own the end‑to‑end design strategy for a product suite spanning supply‑chain mapping, customs entry, PLM/ERP integration, regulatory tooling, logistics provider workflows, and financial services. Design for personas that share objects but not mental models: trade compliance officers, customs brokers, CBP officers, logistics dispatchers, suppliers, and AI agents. Build a design system that is opinionated about coherence but flexible by persona – a single navigation, visual language, and pattern set modulated by role and use case. Facilitate collaboration across organizations with shared workspaces, cross‑boundary handoffs, and trust & access patterns. Lead as a Product Thinker, Not Just a Design Thinker Partner with Product, Engineering, and Data Science leaders to set strategy and own outcomes against business and network metrics. Translate design investment into activation, time‑to‑value, workflow completion, multi‑party adoption, network k‑factor, and product‑led expansion. Lead customer research and discovery, using insights to influence product decisions. Create a clear narrative that aligns executives, customers, and hires around design as a competitive moat. Partner Across the Company Work with Engineering on the design‑to‑code pipeline: shared primitives, AI‑assisted generation, automated accessibility, and a contribution model that lets front‑end engineers extend the system. Collaborate with Product on roadmap and discovery, producing prototypes in the open instead of gated handoffs. Coordinate with Customer Experience, Marketing, and Sales to ensure a unified voice across all touchpoints. Who You Are You think in systems, not screens. You built a living design system that non‑designers use, and you treat it as the team's highest‑leverage product. You’re agent‑native. You actively use AI tools in research, prototyping, variant generation, critique, and shipping, and you own the design language that makes human‑and‑agent collaboration seamless. You’re a product thinker. You make credible strategy arguments, own business metrics, and drive outcomes, not just aesthetics. You design for many users. You keep a coherent experience across tax, compliance, government, broker, supplier, and agent personas. You’re a builder. You prototype, review, document principles, and raise the system's floor. You’re technically fluent. You understand CSS, React, tokens, component APIs, and accessibility standards, and you can discuss implementation with engineering. You communicate with clarity. You present strategy to CEOs, customers, boards, and junior designers alike. You’re energized by hard problems. The agent‑native, multi‑product network you will shape is one of the biggest challenges in enterprise software. Preferred Qualifications 10+ years in product or UX design, 4+ leading design orgs in complex, multi‑product B2B/enterprise SaaS. Portfolio showing ownership of a design system that non‑designers use to ship production experiences. Experience designing AI‑mediated or agentic in‑product experiences – trust, provenance, confidence, and graceful failure patterns. Experience designing across multiple personas and organizations (collaborative SaaS, platform, marketplace, or network). Strong product instincts and comfort owning outcomes against business/network metrics (activation, time‑to‑value, adoption, k‑factor, PQLs). Hands‑on fluency with modern AI tools integrated into design workflow. Financial, regulatory, or analytical experience – visualizations, dashboards, or decision‑support systems. Background building a design org in a high‑growth, zero‑to‑one environment.
