Senior Legal Specialist - Card LitigationThe Legal Department is seeking an experienced paralegal (known as "Legal Specialist" at Capital One) to assist in managing defensive litigation for the Card Litigation portfolio. The Senior Legal Specialist will report to a lawyer on the card litigation team and manage a portfolio of litigation matters. Each role will involve interaction with internal business associates and with internal and external legal counsel.Job responsibilities will include:Reviewing and analyzing defensive litigation mattersAnalyzing complaints, significant matters, motions, discovery, disputes, and fraud claimsPerforming research to independently gather internal documents and information relevant to casesMaintaining litigation case files, including pleadings, discovery, and correspondenceSupporting internal and external legal counsel in identifying relevant account information and developing litigation strategiesManaging interactions with external counsel and performing necessary research to respond to complaints, counterclaims and discovery requestsIn some matters, interfacing and negotiating with opposing parties or counsel and/or co-defendants or their counsel.Working a high volume caseload, managing competing priorities, and meeting litigation deadlinesWorking cases in an efficient and effective way to mitigate risk for the companyWorking with internal legal counsel and/or business clients to improve existing business practices and proceduresSupporting team with monthly reporting responsibilities to internal business associatesThe successful candidate will have:Knowledge of consumer finance laws, collection laws and regulationsExcellent problem solving, judgment, and decision-making skillsExcellent organizational skills and ability to work independentlyExcellent communication and influencing skills, both written and verbalCapability to anticipate and resolve problems quickly and independentlyThe ability to work in a fast paced environment, properly prioritize workload, and meet litigation deadlines.Enthusiasm and willingness to assume increased responsibilityBasic Qualifications:High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent certificationAt least 2 years of experience in a paralegal role, in an in-house legal department or law firmPreferred Qualifications:3+ years of paralegal experience with either an in-house legal department or law firm, with preference to a background in litigation1+ years of experience managing external legal counsel2+ years of experience using either Google Workspace (formerly G Suite – Gmail and Google Docs and Drive) or Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)At this time, Capital One will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position.This role is hybrid, meaning associates spend 3 days per week in-person at one of our offices listed on this job posting.The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.McLean, VA: $96,500 - $110,100 for Sr. Legal SpecialistRichmond, VA: $87,700 - $100,100 for Sr. Legal SpecialistCandidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI).
