Academic HR Analyst (6414C) – Materials Science & Engineering This position reports to the Department Managers of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) and Nuclear Engineering (NE) and focuses on academic personnel administration, recruitment, recruitment strategy, and fiscal oversight, with a strong emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion. Responsibilities Manages academic personnel administration essential to faculty advancement cases and salary increases, ensuring fairness and equity across a large faculty body. Analyzes faculty appointment, merit, and promotion cases; drafts full‑scale recommendation letters and evaluates case documents for compliance with UC Academic Personnel policy. Monitors and advises on leave accrual, sabbatical credits, and other leave matters; administers reporting procedures, salary percentages, and fiscal impacts for departmental budgets. Provides guidance to Senate and non‑Senate faculty on employment‑related matters, notifies faculty of policy changes related to benefits and retirement, and coordinates summer salary appointments and vice‑chair stipends. Develops new faculty startup packages, residence and spousal placement communications, and ensures coordination across campus units for multi‑source funding. Investigates academic faculty complaints, offers strategic recommendations, and interprets APM and university directives. Oversees hiring and payroll actions across multiple appointments, maintains accurate employee records, and updates COE faculty databases. Manages nomination processes for MSE and NE faculty for research and award programs. Drafts and administers Temporary Academic Staffing (TAS) proposals, leveraging historical data for visiting faculty utilization. Provides policy guidance to faculty search committees and oversees interview conduct. Coordinates joint appointment activities with related units and initiatives, ensuring salary equity and appointment compliance. Recruits faculty through strategic outreach, especially targeting women and underrepresented minority groups, in partnership with Office of Faculty Equity and Welfare. Serves as MSE/NE Academic Personnel liaison with college and campus units, resolves complex personnel problems, and advises on policy precedents. Contributes to career staff work on faculty awards submissions and serves as AP team lead for projects. Assists with recruitment, hiring, and payroll for multi‑location appointments, including international faculty recruitment and visa management. Maintains and oversees the department’s proprietary database for faculty recruiting and collaborates with the APRecruit and APSearch processes. Provides leadership on strategic planning, policy development, workforce analysis, and implementation of interactive tracking systems. Performs special projects as directed by Department Managers. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Advanced knowledge of and ability to apply UC Academic Personnel policy, statutes, regulations, and collective bargaining units. Strong analytical skills to evaluate complex management issues, design projects, and advise senior officials. Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences and stakeholder relationships. Demonstrated initiative, tact, planning, and political acumen in academic environments. Salary & Benefits This is a 100% FTE career position with a salary range of $101,600 to $145,700 yearly, paid monthly. The position is FLSA Exempt and eligible for the full benefits package offered by the University of California, Berkeley.
