About the Role

The Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee, I, II, or IV performs operational, laboratory, maintenance, and monitoring activities essential to the treatment and distribution of safe drinking water for the community. This position supports the operation of the Town's water treatment facilities by monitoring plant performance, conducting testing and inspections, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Working as part of the Water Treatment Division, the Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee, I, II, or IV assists with or independently performs treatment plant operations, laboratory testing, equipment monitoring, preventative maintenance, and process adjustments to maintain water quality and system reliability. Operators routinely monitor treatment processes through visual observations, equipment readings, and chemical and biological testing to ensure optimal plant performance.

The Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee, I, II, or IV collaborates with fellow operators, maintenance staff, supervisors, and customers to support daily plant operations and address operational issues. Responsibilities include maintaining operational records, monitoring chemical feed systems, troubleshooting equipment, collecting samples, responding to customer inquiries, and assisting with facility maintenance activities.

Depending on experience level and certification, the Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee may work under closer supervision while developing operational knowledge and obtaining required certifications, while Operators I, II, and IV exercise increasing levels of independent judgment in monitoring plant operations, troubleshooting process issues, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Schedule: Friday through Sunday, 5:30 PM 6:00 AM.

Duties and Responsibilities

Monitor the status and performance of water treatment plant operations and distribution systems.

Observe plant equipment, treatment processes, gauges, meters, and control systems to ensure proper operation.

Collect representative water samples and perform routine laboratory chemical and biological testing.

Analyze test results and assist with operational adjustments to maintain water quality standards.

Troubleshoot operational and equipment issues and assist with resolving more complex treatment process concerns.

Backwash filters and perform routine process control activities.

Refill and monitor chemical storage and feed systems; check and maintain proper chemical tank levels.

Conduct routine inspections and operational rounds throughout the treatment facility.

Monitor and inspect pumps, motors, generators, filters, chemical feed equipment, settling basins, and related treatment systems.

Assist with preventative maintenance activities and perform routine facility maintenance including cleaning, painting, and minor repairs.

Assist maintenance personnel with major repairs and equipment replacement projects as needed.

Maintain accurate operational logs, laboratory records, maintenance reports, and inventory documentation.

Track chemical, equipment, and operational supply inventory levels.

Respond to customer inquiries and assist in resolving water service questions and complaints.

Follow established safety procedures and regulatory requirements while working with treatment chemicals, mechanical equipment, and plant systems.

Assist with maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local drinking water regulations.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

Water Treatment Plant Operator Trainee

High School Diploma or GED.

Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

Must obtain a North Carolina Water Operator Grade C Certification within one (1) year of hire.

Water Treatment Plant Operator I

High School Diploma or GED.

One (1) to two (2) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment, preferably in a water treatment facility; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

Possession of a North Carolina Water Operator Grade C Certification.

Water Treatment Plant Operator II

High School Diploma or GED.

Two (2) to six (6) years of directly related water treatment operations experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

Possession of a North Carolina Water Operator Grade B Certification.

Water Treatment Plant Operator IV

High School Diploma or GED.

Three (3) to eight (8) years of directly related water treatment operations experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

Possession of a North Carolina Water Operator Grade A Certification.
