Job Title : History Teacher Salary Range : $56,167-$105,697 Supervisor : Principal Job Classification : Exempt Contract Length : 10-months (200 days) Position Type: Middle School Teaching/ Social Studies Date Posted: 4/17/2026 Job Summary The History/Social Studies Teacher is responsible for developing in each student an appreciation of American ideals and cultural heritage, developing proficiency in the use of History/Social Studies inquiry skills and concepts; motivating each pupil to understand and exercise his rights, privileges, and responsibilities as a citizen; developing understanding of the geographical, historical, cultural, and political factors which influence the development of work regions; and, encouraging students to develop sound opinions based on study of facts concerning operation of political and economic systems. The History/Social Studies Teacher reports directly to the Principal or his/her designee. Essential Job Functions At least a Bachelor’s degree with a major or minor in History/Social Studies or Middle Education. Virginia Collegiate Professional license with the appropriate endorsement for the area indicated above. Teaches courses in Social Studies, History, Geography, American government, Political Science, or humanities to secondary students, utilizing course of study adopted by the Virginia Department of Job Specifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required) Education and other appropriate learning activities. Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. Develops a balanced History/Social Studies program involving factual background material, material on current events, discussion time, and other appropriate activities designed to encourage students to develop skills and attitudes, draw conclusions, achieve improved interpersonal relations, and make value judgments based on scientific methods of inquiry. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes and cultural backgrounds. Develops knowledge of the purpose, structure and operation of American governmental and economic system, and the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. Makes current material from the mass media available to students, plans and guides discussions of current problems against background of geographical environment and history of area being studied. Develops an understanding of the contributions of racial, religious and political groups to American culture. Develops knowledge of political and economic systems of other nations and their influence on personal freedom, education and living standards. Encourages students to become aware of the complexity and interrelations of local, state, and national and world problems. Maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities. Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records. Communicate with parents and school counselors to discuss student progress. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs. Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities. Attends staff meetings, PTA meetings, and serves on staff committees as required. Performs other related duties as requested. Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor's Degree Certification and Licensure: Virginia professional license or ability to obtain a license. Working Conditions and Physical Demands Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
