Sign Language Interpreter Expert

Professional Expert Responsibilities Provide interpreter services to deaf, hard‑of‑hearing, and deaf‑blind students. Assist in the advancement of student access and communication skills. Interpret non‑complex, moderately complex, or advanced subject matter as appropriate to the level. Advocate for student access and comply with state and federal laws related to deaf students. Qualification Levels Level I Entry level proficiency in American Sign Language or Signed English. Allows independent interpretation of non‑technical subject matter. Level II Intermediate proficiency. Capable of interpreting moderately complex, technical subject matter. Level III Advanced proficiency; fluent in interpreting and transliterating across a range of classroom settings and campus venues. Level IV Expert skill level; must assess and accommodate communication needs and provide full‑spectrum interpreting services campus‑wide. Required certifications or equivalent: ITP, EIPA, RID, NAD, or National Interpreter Certification. This is a temporary/short‑term professional expert position to fill specific projects. Additional Requirements Regular attendance is essential. Mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act. At‑will, short‑term employment; not classified personnel with entitlement rights. Eligibility to work in the United States and verification of employment history required. Professional Expert Agreement governs terms of employment. Retired CalPERS Annuitants may not exceed 960 hours per fiscal year (July 1–June 30).
