BoulderCentre for Orthopedics & Spine (BCO) is a physician-owned, independent orthopedic practice serving patients throughout Boulder County and the surrounding communities. With clinics in Boulder and Broomfield and two ambulatory surgery centers, BCO provides comprehensive, high-quality musculoskeletal care across a broad range of specialties and services.

Leadership Scope: Provides executive leadership and oversight for clinic operations, marketing, facilities, therapy, imaging, DME, ambulatory surgery centers, information technology, and related managed service providers .

Wage: $125,000 - $175,000 annually (commensurate with experience)

Position Summary

BoulderCentre for Orthopedics & Spine is seeking an experienced and strategic Chief Operating Officer (COO) to provide executive leadership across the organization's operational and administrative functions.

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the COO will be a key partner to the CEO and physician leadership in developing and executing BCO's strategic priorities and will have broad accountability for the practice's operational, financial, and administrative performance.

The COO will oversee a diverse portfolio that includes clinic operations, revenue cycle, human resources, compliance, marketing and business development, facilities, information technology, therapy, imaging, DME, and executive oversight of BCO's affiliated ambulatory surgery centers.

This position is responsible for balancing day-to-day operational excellence with long-term growth, while supporting BCO's commitment to high-quality, cost-effective musculoskeletal care and preserving the organization's independent, physician-led model.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Growth

• Partner with the CEO and physician leadership to develop, communicate, and execute BCO's strategic plan and annual operating priorities.
• Lead market and competitive analysis, including patient demographics, referral patterns, market opportunities, and competitor positioning.
• Evaluate opportunities for geographic expansion, new service lines, ancillary services, and additional clinic locations.
• Develop business cases, financial analyses, and pro formas for physician and Board review.
• Support physician recruitment, onboarding, and practice development in partnership with the CEO and physician leadership.

Practice Operations

• Provide executive oversight of BCO's clinic operations in Boulder and Broomfield, including front office, call center, back office, imaging, DME, and therapy services.
• Drive improvements in provider and clinic utilization, patient access, operational throughput, and patient experience.
• Establish meaningful operating metrics and dashboards and hold department leaders accountable for performance.
• Identify opportunities to improve workflows, efficiency, service delivery, and cross-functional collaboration.
• Lead organizational adoption of technology and process improvements, including EHR/practice management optimization and AI-enabled tools.
• Ensure patient concerns and operational issues are addressed effectively and consistently.

Financial Performance & Revenue Cycle

• Partner with the CEO and CFO in developing and managing annual operating and capital budgets.
• Monitor financial and operational performance and implement corrective actions when needed.
• Analyze revenue cycle performance, payer mix, productivity, costs, and other key financial and operational drivers.
• Translate complex financial and operational data into actionable recommendations for executive and physician leadership.

Ambulatory Surgery Centers

• Provide executive-level oversight of BCO's affiliated ambulatory surgery centers in partnership with ASC clinical and business leadership.
• Ensure ASC strategy, case migration, financial performance, and physician engagement align with practice-wide objectives.
• Evaluate labor, productivity, supply, implant, payer, and other cost drivers to identify opportunities for operational and margin improvement.
• Prepare operational and financial analyses and presentations for physician owners, the Board, and executive leadership.

People & Culture

• Develop leadership capability across BCO's management team and promote strong, accountable leadership practices.
• Assess employee engagement and manager effectiveness and develop strategies to address identified opportunities.
• Foster a culture of empowerment, accountability, collaboration, and action.
• Lead through managers and build high-performing, cross-functional teams.

Compliance, Legal & Risk

• Provide executive oversight of BCO's compliance program and regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, OSHA, CMS, payer requirements, billing compliance, scope of practice, and applicable federal and state healthcare regulations.
• Oversee the development, interpretation, and maintenance of organizational policies and procedures.
• Respond to compliance inquiries, audits, and regulatory correspondence.
• Negotiate and manage vendor, supply, service, and technology agreements.
• Coordinate with outside legal counsel regarding contracts, disputes, regulatory matters, and other legal issues.

Facilities & Information Technology

• Oversee facilities management, leases, maintenance, capital projects, and space planning across BCO locations.
• Partner with BCO's outsourced IT managed service provider to ensure reliable, secure, and effective technology infrastructure.
• Evaluate technology needs and opportunities that support operational efficiency, security, and organizational growth.

Governance & Executive Leadership

• Serve as a member of BCO's executive leadership team.
• Attend and present at Board of Directors, shareholder, and physician meetings.
• Prepare executive and Board materials and support organizational governance processes.
• Represent BCO with physicians, employees, vendors, employers, community partners, and industry organizations.
• Maintain current knowledge of healthcare administration, orthopedic practice operations, ambulatory surgery centers, payer trends, and emerging industry practices.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree in business, healthcare administration, or a related field.
• Minimum of 8 years of progressive healthcare operations leadership experience.
• At least 5 years of senior-management experience within a physician group practice or comparable healthcare organization.
• Demonstrated experience leading through managers and overseeing multiple operational functions.
• Strong understanding of physician practice operations, revenue cycle, financial management, and healthcare regulatory compliance.

Preferred

• Master's degree such as MHA, MBA, or related advanced degree.
• Experience in orthopedics, musculoskeletal care, or a physician-owned specialty practice.
• Experience with ambulatory surgery center operations.
• Experience with revenue cycle management and payer relationships.
• CMPE/FACMPE (MGMA) or FACHE certification.

• Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, pro forma development, cost analysis, and benchmarking.
• Advanced analytical skills and the ability to translate complex operational and financial information into clear recommendations.
• Proven ability to lead organizational change and achieve results through managers and cross-functional teams.
• Experience evaluating and negotiating contracts and managing vendor legal relationships.
• Excellent relationship-building skills with physicians, employees, patients, vendors, and community partners.
• Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with physician owners and Board leadership.
• Sound judgment, discretion, and composure when managing complex or competing priorities.
• A decisive yet approachable leadership style.
• Intermediate to advanced data mining, data manipulation, and data interpretation skills.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position is primarily performed in a professional office and healthcare environment across BCO locations and requires regular travel between sites. The role may involve occasional exposure to healthcare environments and patient-related conditions.

The position requires the ability to communicate effectively, use standard office and computer equipment, attend meetings, review documents and data, and move throughout BCO facilities as needed to perform essential job functions. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required based on organizational needs.
