Lead Orthopedic Technician

POSITION SUMMARY Under the direction of the Operations Manager and Assistant Nurse Manager, this role supports the daily operations of the Orthopedic clinic. The Team Lead provides administrative and technical support to the orthopedic technician and Medical Assistant groups, managing scheduling, inventory and ordering of supplies, equipment maintenance, daily schedule screening, and patient experience. Position: Team Lead – Orthopedic. Department: Orthopedics. Schedule: Full Time. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES Directly responsible for Orthopedic Technician and Medical Assistant staff. Make recommendations to management regarding additional staffing needs or role changes. Maintain departmental productivity measurements and report status on a monthly basis to the immediate supervisor. Assign and monitor staff workload to ensure maximum productivity; support an atmosphere and conditions that foster optimal efficiency. Responsible for all subordinates’ training needs; develop annual training and development plans and coordinate training with each employee. Provide feedback during employee performance reviews and assist with developing performance improvement plans when needed. Organize, in conjunction with the Nurse Manager, the review and approval of schedule changes and time‑off requests to meet staffing needs. Enter payroll and maintain a system to document employee absenteeism. Maintain regular communication with physician leaders regarding departmental practices, policies and procedures. Assist physician leaders and administrators in developing departmental goals and objectives to ensure the highest quality care. Participate in discussions and efforts to resolve problems and improve the quality of service provided by the department. Support the development of department policies and procedures necessary to achieve agreed‑upon goals and objectives, and ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulatory and accrediting agency requirements. Maintain a scheduled annual review of the Department Policy and Procedure Manual as it relates to the Orthopedic Technician role. Monitor and report on employees’ overtime, lateness patterns and absenteeism. Perform training and onboarding duties to ensure staff are familiar with procedure techniques, equipment and department policy. Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies and equipment to meet operational demands; assist the Operations Manager with purchasing equipment as needed. Ensure that all technical billing is completed on a daily basis for all patients seen. Review the Missing Elements Report and resolve billing problems within five days. Problem‑solve impediments to timely charge entry and resolution; notify the Clinical Operations Manager when unable to do so. Conform to hospital standards of performance and conduct to provide the best possible customer service and patient care. Uphold and apply AIDET values and employ service recovery mechanisms with visitors, physicians and peers in a courteous, professional and friendly manner. Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to adult and young patients. Utilize the hospital’s values as the basis for decision making and for advancing the division’s mission. Follow established infection control and safety procedures. Create rotating weekly Technician and Medical Assistant schedules. Designate special projects as needed. Monitor patient wait time, communicate and troubleshoot delays as needed. Act as liaison between the technician team and providers; mitigate clinical and administrative issues during provider sessions. Communicate provider concerns related to scheduling and clinical procedures to the Assistant Nurse Manager. Attend all departmental weekly Team Lead meetings; support Tech and MA teams with compliance‑related courses. Prepare all Tech/MA team meeting agendas and minutes; support the Assistant RN Manager with action items from the meeting. Track and order Traction and Stryker Needle supplies. Assist communication and management of walk‑in patients; oversee inpatient admission processes for patients on stretchers or in inmates. Oversee the EKG Tech pool; assist staff with administrative tasks: verify and update demographic and provider information on patients. Assist with technical scheduling issues such as appointment cancellations due to erroneous scheduling. Maintain clinic files and patient records; screen patient charts prior to appointments, check for lab work, x‑ray and other pertinent results, and verify information as required. ORTHOPEDIC TECHNICIAN RESPONSIBILITIES Assist attending and resident physicians with all appropriate orthopedic procedures, using appropriate techniques in accordance with hospital policies. Apply and remove splints and casts; provide cast care (conditioning, spreading, remodeling, trimming, polishing) to ensure quality patient care. Measure patients, provide and instruct on assistive devices such as crutches, canes, slings and collars. Instruct patients in basic cast and device skin care, simple exercise routines and ambulation to ensure safety and comfort. Document all care on the clinical record. Assemble, adjust, remove and check traction equipment for inpatients, ensuring daily stability and proper alignment. Participate in development and adherence to policies, procedures and practice guidelines. Remove sutures, change dressings and assist the orthopedic surgeon in the operating room with cast application or maintenance of bone alignment. Order and maintain adequate inventory of orthopedic supplies in clinic and assigned inpatient areas. Place daily/weekly orders with M.D.C. to establish and maintain par levels for equipment and supplies; complete purchase orders as needed. Clean and organize storage areas; maintain the traction supply room and clinic. Conduct routine unit/area rounds to retrieve and locate orthopedic equipment; deliver equipment and supplies to patient care units promptly. Allocate, maintain and store orthopedic equipment and supplies; evaluate quality to ensure safe patient care. Remove malfunctioning equipment; report to supervisor for repair and confirm completion. Maintain accurate and complete clinical records. Complete charge forms for applied casts or orthotics. Batch and post charges for services rendered and supplies used to optimize reimbursement. Place patients in exam rooms and assume Medical Assistant duties as needed. Perform other duties as needed. OTHER DUTIES Perform the duties of a Medical Assistant as needed. Adhere to BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards. Complete other custodial responsibilities as required. JOB REQUIREMENTS Education : Bachelor’s degree in Science or related field OR Associate’s degree with completion of an Orthopedic Technology Certification, military medic technical training or EMS certification. Experience : Minimum of two years of related work experience in this role; one full year of allied health coursework; one to two years of supervisory experience preferred. Licenses, Registrations and Certifications : Orthopedic Technology Certification preferred. Knowledge and Skills : Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with patients and staff. Strong customer service, time management, computer and organizational skills. Self‑directed with initiative to handle complex problems; ability to respond to change positively. Ability to express ideas and concepts orally and in writing. Consistent team member promoting departmental success. Mature and professional demeanor at all times. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and clinical computer applications. COMPENSATION RANGE $62,500.00 – $91,000.00 (based on minimum qualifications; considers education, experience, skills, certifications, and market competitiveness).
